Oracle VirtualBox useful for virtualization Virtual machine (VM). This is the special environment that VirtualBox creates for your guest operating system while it is running. In other words, you run your guest operating system "in" a VM. Normally, a VM will be shown as a window on your computer's desktop, but depending on which of the various frontends of VirtualBox you use, it can be displayed in full-screen mode or remotely on another computer. Why is virtualization useful? The techniques and features that VirtualBox provides are useful for several scenarios: Running multiple operating systems simultaneously. VirtualBox allows you to run more than one operating system at a time. This way, you can run software written for one operating system on another (for example, Windows software on Linux or a Mac) without having to reboot to use it. Since you can configure what kinds of "virtual" hardware should be presented to each such operating system, you can install an old operating system such as DOS or OS/2 even if your real computer's hardware is no longer supported by that operating system. Easier software installations. Software vendors can use virtual machines to ship entire software configurations. For example, installing a complete mail server solution on a real machine can be a tedious task. With VirtualBox, such a complex setup (then often called an "appliance") can be packed into a virtual machine. Installing and running a mail server becomes as easy as importing such an appliance into VirtualBox. Testing and disaster recovery. Once installed, a virtual machine and its virtual hard disks can be considered a "container" that can be arbitrarily frozen, woken up, copied, backed up, and transported between hosts. On top of that, with the use of another VirtualBox feature called "snapshots", one can save a particular state of a virtual machine and revert back to that state, if necessary. This way, one can freely experiment with a computing environment. If something goes wrong (e.g. after installing misbehaving software or infecting the guest with a virus), one can easily switch back to a previous snapshot and avoid the need of frequent backups and restores. Any number of snapshots can be created, allowing you to travel back and forward in virtual machine time. You can delete snapshots while a VM is running to reclaim disk space. Infrastructure consolidation. Virtualization can significantly reduce hardware and electricity costs. Most of the time, computers today only use a fraction of their potential power and run with low average system loads. A lot of hardware resources as well as electricity is thereby wasted. So, instead of running many such physical computers that are only partially used, one can pack many virtual machines onto a few powerful hosts and balance the loads between them. Guest Additions: shared folders, seamless windows, 3D virtualization. The VirtualBox Guest Additions are software packages which can be installed inside of supported guest systems to improve their performance and to provide additional integration and communication with the host system. After installing the Guest Additions, a virtual machine will support automatic adjustment of video resolutions, seamless windows, accelerated 3D graphics and more VirtualBox can allow virtual machines to access the USB devices on your host directly. To achieve this, VirtualBox presents the guest operating system with a virtual USB controller. As soon as the guest system starts using a USB device, it will appear as unavailable on the host.

Virtual Machines are computers running "guest" operating systems inside virtual resources - in isolated sandboxes - within a host operating system. The host operating system runs on the physical hardware. The gust OS uses the hosts resources (USB, network adapter, mouse, etc) in a safe way. The host will run even if a guest crashes. The guest OS cannot alter any of the hosts files/folders/sub directories other than those shared. The act of sharing is proactive.

Demonstrates how to download Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS, create an Ubuntu virtual machine in VirtualBox, install Ubuntu into VirtualBox, update Ubuntu and finally install Guest Additions into Ubuntu. Also demonstrates how to adjust the monitor settings and how to obtain the complete list of software installed in Ubuntu Desktop. If you want 3D please make sure that 3D Acceleration is checked in the Display Setting of Oracle VM VirtualBox Manage when creating your virtual machine. You can also determine if 3D is supported by going to the command line after the installation is complete and entering "/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p". If you have a 3D graphics card and Unity 3D Support is "no" you can see how to get Unity 3D Support by viewing the "Enable Unity 3D Support for Ubuntu 12 inside VirtualBox" video. If you are getting the "system is running in low graphics mode" error try looking at "http://askubuntu.com/questions/141606/how-to-fix-the-system-is-running-in-low-graphics-mode-error" Update June 28, 2013. VirtualBox 4.2.12 Guest Additions and Ubuntu do not play well together. Usually gives "System is running in low graphics mode" error. Use VirtuaBox version 4.2.14+ to get an Ubuntu install to work nicely. Update September 6, 2013. When installing Ubuntu 12.04.3 (version 3) Ubuntu will not shut off after the install. My install used 32 bit Ubuntu, 512 MB Random Access Memory, 128MB Video Memory and 3D Acceleration checked. Make sure you have the latest version of VirtualBox 4.2.16+. Use "Machine-Close-Power off the machine" from the VirtualBox Manager (top left) to shut down Ubuntu. Then restart and install all updates from the Ubuntu Update Manager. After the update the restart works very slowly. Then install VirtualBox Guest Additions and everything should work now. Update June 27 2014. Install Ubuntu 14 04 LTS Desktop- "http://youtu.be/kz7TcHW2UTc". Into VirtualBox is available on this channel.

In order to share files between the host operating system (Windows 7) and the guest (Debian Linux) OS you need to add Oracle VirtualBox guest additions on Debian Linux. The guest additions have many more advantages and make the virtual machine run easier within the host (better mouse/keyboard and other peripherals control among others). Adding VirtualBox guest additions in Windows guests is exceptionally easy. It needs a little work on Linux and then it is very easy. In this tutorial you learn how to do it.

Installing Debian Linux on Oracle VM VirtualBox from a disk image is veru easy when you use the graphic installation menu. First download the latest netinstall iso (disk image) from the Debian web site. You do not need to burn it onto a physical medium (cd) as the virtualization software (Oracle VM VirtualBox) allows you to load disk images into the virtual cd/dvd drive - you can also load physical media. A new VM wizard guides you and then you can go and drink a cup of tea (I grew up in England) and before you know it you have a Debian machine to play with.

VirtualBox is free virtualization software from Oracle that allows you to run multiple operating systems on one computer. This video demonstrates how to install the latest version of VirtualBox into Ubuntu 12.04. Since VirtualBox comes as a .deb package, VirtualBox can be downloaded from the Oracle site and installed using Ubuntu's Software Center. The installation of the VirtualBox Extensions is also covered. An additional tool Gnome-System-Tools is also installed from Ubuntu's Software Center. This is used to easily add or configure Ubuntu users to the vboxuser and vboxsf groups. Finally a working Windows XP virtual machine is shown running using the VirtualBox installation. The creation of your own virtual machine is not covered in this video. There are additional videos on this channel that demonstrate how to create virtual Ubuntu desktops and servers. A viewer pointed this out to me. Prior to doing a kernel upgrade on your Ubuntu host with VirtualBox you should run "sudo apt-get install dkms" (after update/upgrade) to keep Ubuntu and VirtualBox Guest Additions playing together nicely. If you want a short explanation of "What is a Virtual Machine?" is see "http://youtu.be/3QDwKS9JtZY" on this channel. Update 5/21/2013. There have been reported problems with the guest additions 4.2.12 and Ubuntu. Workaround is to use guest additions 4.2.10 or beta 4.2.13 Update 2/4/14 If you need to upgrade VirtualBox, Ubuntu Software Center may not allow you to do an upgrade. For an upgrade or install of VirtualBox 4.2+ see "Install/Upgrade Oracle VirtualBox 4.3 in Ubuntu 12.04"- "http://youtu.be/2DfbUP2LDTk" on this channel.

In this tutorial i show you how to get and install the Virtualbox guest additions and demonstrate the difference between a virtual machine with guest additions and one without. If you haven't already done so i would also recommend that you install the Virtualbox extension pack as this adds further functionality to your virtual machines. By installing the guest additions on your virtual machine you will be able to share directories between your host machine and virtual machine, have access to your host machines clipboard and make use of hardware acceleration for your virtual machines graphics ( especially useful if you want your virtual machine's desktop to be able to maximise and fill your screen).
