How-to Style a Bonsai tree: Before After #1

05:53
How-to make and style a Bonsai tree? Tree before and after being styled? A common misconception is that the plants used for Bonsai are genetically 'dwarfed' plants. Bonsai trees are normal plants, propagated like any other, but trained using sophisticated techniques to keep them in miniature size. The styling of Bonsai trees includes basic methods like regular pruning and wiring, but also more advanced techniques including the creation of deadwood. Today in the Bonsai Zone, I show the creation of a "Banyan style" Schefflera arboricola bonsai, in my demo at the Misseto bonsai society. My Schefflera was started the same way 20 years ago and has been styled using clip and grow ever since. This tree has been growing all summer and it is time to do the "clip" part of "clip and grow"! Today's update is my Money tree bonsai. (Pachira aquatica) Here are the links to the Misseto bonsai society.... http://www.missetobonsai.org/ https://www.facebook.com/misseto.bonsai

Style Techniques of Growing a Bonsai Tree

03:28
Once you have a tree, no matter whether it was bought from a shop or cultivated, you can begin training, shaping and styling it. This is one of the most difficult steps of growing a bonsai tree but it also the most creative one. Don’t let the fact that it took a couple of decades to improve the techniques of keeping a plant miniaturized scare you off. The basics are quite simple. Let’s start with the pruning first. Pruning allows us both to keep the plant miniaturized and shape it. The purpose is to create such a tree that will resemble the original species as close as possible. The suitable seasons for significant pruning are spring and summer although it depends mainly on the type of the tree you are growing. A concave cutter will damage branches less than usual cutters as hollow wounds it leaves behind heal much easier. If the following instances occur, the branches should be removed: - If there are unnaturally twisted and turned branches - If there are two branches at the same height, one of them should be gotten rid of. - If the branches at the top of the tree are disproportionately thick Wiring is another crucial technique. If your goal is to bend and shape the branches somehow, you can wrap annealed copper or anodized aluminum around them. This technique can be used all year round. Be careful to move the wire away before it begins damaging branches that become thicker.

how to make a bonsai tree ( Penjing Style )

How to make a bonsai tree: In this video I am going to show you that how to make a bonsai step by step,it is a beginners tutorial on how to make a bonsai tree at home. The bonsai making process has RTB(Root,Trunk,Branch)formula.I am Ayan from Bonsai Tricks and a Lot More. Please Like,Comment,Share and don't forget to subscribe my channel.Learn how to make a Bonsai tree from a Bonsai starter kit with this movie. For more information, see: My other videos. In this movie the tree steps of growing a Bonsai are explained; cultivation, training and care. Though Bonsai is a centuries-old form of art, getting started with this fascinating hobby is not at all that difficult! The tree in this movie is a Ixora which is as good as Chamaecyparis plumosa. Bonsai (盆栽, "tray planting" About this sound pronunciation (help·info)) is a Japanese art form using trees grown in containers. Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of penzai or penjing from which the art originated, and the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese hòn non bộ. The Japanese tradition dates back over a thousand years. "Bonsai" is a Japanese pronunciation of the earlier Chinese term penzai. The word bonsai is often used in English as an umbrella term for all miniature trees in containers or pots. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the viewer, and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity for the grower. By contrast with other plant cultivation practices, bonsai is not intended for production of food or for medicine. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees growing in a container. A bonsai is created beginning with a specimen of source material. This may be a cutting, seedling, or small tree of a species suitable for bonsai development. Bonsai can be created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species that produces true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot confinement with crown and root pruning. Some species are popular as bonsai material because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles, that make them appropriate for the compact visual scope of bonsai. The source specimen is shaped to be relatively small and to meet the aesthetic standards of bonsai. When the candidate bonsai nears its planned final size it is planted in a display pot, usually one designed for bonsai display in one of a few accepted shapes and proportions. From that point forward, its growth is restricted by the pot environment. Throughout the year, the bonsai is shaped to limit growth, redistribute foliar vigor to areas requiring further development, and meet the artist's detailed design. The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwarfing, but dwarfing generally refers to research, discovery, or creation of plant cultivars that are permanent, genetic miniatures of existing species. Bonsai does not require genetically dwarfed trees, but rather depends on growing small trees from regular stock and seeds. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation, and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-size trees. Check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonsai for more. In this video I have used Kapok tree. Ceiba pentandra is a tropical tree of the order Malvales and the family Malvaceae (previously separated in the family Bombacaceae), native to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and (as the variety C. pentandra var. guineensis) to tropical west Africa. A somewhat smaller variety is found throughout southern Asia and the East Indies. Kapok is the most used common name for the tree and may also refer to the cotton-like fluff obtained from its seed pods. The tree is cultivated for the seed fibre, particularly in south-east Asia, and is also known as the Java cotton, Java kapok, silk-cotton, Samauma, or ceiba. Visit https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceiba_pentandra for more.
Styling and repotting an old Juniper bonsai tree | Peter Chan

09:08
Restyling a big 80 Year old Chinese Juniper bonsai tree by Peter Chan. Bonsai growers often regard truer outdoor plants as ‘real’ bonsai. These are the trees and shrubs that will grow outside without special protection. Many bonsai enthusiasts grow only outdoor bonsai because they are much easier to care for and there is more scope for creativity. As outdoor bonsai grow faster than indoor bonsai, you will see the results of reshaping, wiring and pruning much sooner. Outdoor bonsai also offer more scope for practicing the hobby. Some enthusiasts make their own bonsai from garden or nursery plants from places such as herons.co.uk, and some collect raw materials from the wild. You can also propagate your own plant from seeds or cuttings or by layering (coming soon). Outdoor bonsai can be taken indoors from time to time. In fact, in countries such as China ands Japan, it is traditional to use bonsai to decorate the home, but the trees are kept indoors for only short periods at a time. After a day or two they are returned to their outdoor positions. The choice of outdoor bonsai is much wider than the indoor species. They tend to be more attractive in terms of shape and foliage than indoor bonsai, especially the deciduous and flowering varieties. Because they are easier to look after, outdoor bonsai live longer than indoor specimens. Indeed, some outdoor bonsai can live for more than 200 years!

African Bonsai Trees - Pierneef Style

03:31
The Pierneef or open-umbrella shape is exclusive to Africa. The African continent has the largest variety of flora in the world, but the Acacia dominates the African scene. These superb trees with their semi-circle crowns, like open umbrellas, inspired Charles to develop a new African style. The umbrella-shaped form was spontaneously named after the well-known South African artist, Jacob Hendrik Pierneef, who depicted many of these tree forms in his paintings.

Banyan Bonsai Tree

03:11
Aerial roots are the distinctive visual draw to banyan-style bonsai trees. Commonly made from various Ficus species, such as the Chinese banyan (Ficus microcarpa) and willow leaf fig (Ficus nerifolia), banyan-style bonsai is also possible with species of Schefflera, Pandanus, Mangrove and Clusia. These are tropical trees that, if grown outside year-round, perform best in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10b to 12. Making a banyan bonsai is about encouraging aerial roots to form on bark in the upper tree and grow down into the soil. The roots that drop near the base can fuse with the main trunk, giving the tree a larger profile. Roots that drop from farther down the branches create secondary trunks, giving a single tree the look of a dense grove.

Bonsai Tree Species Guide for Junipers Forest style

04:41
Observe old trees in nature, and you will see plenty of variation. Trees grow upright or slanting, in groups, pairs, or alone, out on plains or clinging to the sides of mountains. They are found in arid, moist, hot, freezing, still, and windy environments, and everywhere in between. Wherever they grow, trees are also affected by animals and diseases. All the stresses that nature places on trees are reflected in their shapes. Bonsai artists look at what nature creates with these factors and work to emulate it when shaping a tree, but they also add their own vision to produce a beautiful bonsai. That’s why a bonsai is so much more than just a tree in a container.

How to Make Banyan Bonsai Aerial roots are the distinctive characteristic of banyan-style trees. 1. Banyan Tree Care 2. Grow a Weeping Chinese Banyan Tree 3. Can You Kill a Banyan Tree With Copper? 4. Kill a Banyan Tree Aerial roots are the distinctive visual draw to banyan-style bonsai trees. 1. Mist the entire tree along with the soil when it is time to water the tree. High humidity and moisture accumulation on the branches encourage root formation from mature wood. 2. Keep the tree in warm temperatures. Trees that form aerial roots are tropical and are most vigorous when the tree is kept above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The tree can survive temperatures in the lower 40's and upper 30's, but will not be in the high growth phase that produces aerial roots. If you are trying to encourage the roots during a season other than summer, this may require bringing the bonsai tree indoors. 3. Keep heavy foliage in the upper branches to shade areas where aerial roots are desired. In the wild, aerial roots grow best in shade under a heavy canopy. The leaf cover also helps keep the moisture evaporating from the soil in the atmosphere around the tree. 4. Protect newly forming aerial roots so they do not dry out. Cut plastic straws to size and slip them over the delicate roots to trap moisture and guide the roots to the soil. If you need to bend the roots over decorative rocks before they can reach the soil, protect them with flexible coverings such as plastic bags with moss inside until the roots have elongated enough to become established in the soil. 5. Cut away undesired aerial roots with pruning shears as close to the bark as possible, being careful not to injure the branch itself. Ficus species easily scar when injured and misplaced cuts may never disappear. 6. Defoliate the banyan bonsai during the growing season with tweezers or finger tips to reduce leaf size in proportion to the tree's small size. 5 alberta spruce bonsai tree styles pt 2

part 2 of my most in depth videos on how to create different styles of bonsai trees using the same species of trees... almost any tree or bush can be trained to whatever style of bonsai type you want it to be but some trees are already headed in certain directions naturally by mother nature ... so i basically took what direction i felt the trees where already headed in and would lend themselves to a certain style... as i learn more with each tree i work on i find it easier to make decisions on which direction to head with each tree... i hope you guys will also find it easier to see the potential in your trees... if one already has most of it's growth cascading downward then it makes sense to style it in a cascade style.. the same goes for a tree that is growing straight up with good taper to style it in a standard upright style... some trees or bushes have so much movement and branching that you just have to make a decision on which way to go... maybe you just pic your favorite style and go with it...
