How to Set Up Lightroom on an External Hard Drive
In this video we take a look at how to make a new Lightroom Catalog on an external hard drive. This can be nice for photographers who want to store their images and catalog on an external drive, freeing up space on their internal.
Lightroom Killer Tips: Using External Drives
Let's say you store all of your photos on an external drive (like I do). Eventually that drive gets full and you buy a larger drive. How do you get your photos to that new drive and make it so Lightroom can see them? Luckily it's really simple and it works the same with just about any version of Lightroom. Check out the video to see how.

Cathy, a freeware catalogue and search tool for Windows
A quick look at Cathy, a freeware disk cataloguing program for Windows. Cathy scans the file names only and is incredibly fast. You can scan any directory you can select; so it could be your hard drive, a CD, DVD, external USB stick, or just a folder. Cathy saves catalogue files in the directory where the .exe is. There are more advanced search options, but in this video I just show a quick search from a selected catalogue. If you don't select a catalogue (and tick search selected) then Cathy will scan from all catalogues. This is extremely useful if you have an archive of work on DVDs or even just for local drives. No installation is necessary. By default Cathy will eject a disc (or mounted drive/ISO) after scanning, so you may want to disable this setting. You can download Cathy here: http://www.mtg.sk/rva/ (scroll down) This video uses annotations to add a few notes; these notes may not be viewable on mobile devices. - - - Please leave me comments with any feedback, questions, or if you would like to see a particular tutorial or tip. How I Backup My Images (Updated)
In this video I demonstrate how I go about backing up my images. Any backup strategy involving Lightroom should adhere to the following rules: 1.) Backup all images in Lightroom as well as the Lightroom Catalog 2.) Make one backup locally to a different hard drive 3.) A second backup should be offsite (the cloud) 4.) Backups should be done automatically, autonomously in the background In the video I talk about the cloud site I use: http://www.crashplan.com

How To Backup Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with Apple's Time Machine Utility
(FREE TUTORIAL) How To Backup Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with Apple's Time Machine Utility Learn how to protect your Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog and all of your photographs in this free video tutorial for Mac OS users. I demonstrate an easy way to protect all of my images, and my Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog, using the Apple's Time Machine utility in this free tutorial and a pair of inexpensive USB external hard drives. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a wonderful image management tool but it is not a backup system. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom’s internal Catalog Backup utility is a placebo and it will do nothing to protect your photography if your computer crashes or hard drive fails. An Adobe Creative Cloud monthly membership subscription is not a backup plan either. Adobe does not offer data protection and backup services. The problem is that no hard drive will last forever. The real question is not “when will my hard drive fail” but rather “what steps can I take right now so that I am properly prepared for this computer’s inevitable demise?” For advice on building a more advanced, and more flexible backup system, using the awesome Carbon Copy Cloner backup utility for Mac from Bombich Software please visit our site. Windows users may find the theory here helpful but unfortunately Time Machine is an Apple product and it is not currently available for Microsoft customers. ------------ Learn Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Lightroom for Mobile, Snapseed from Google, and more with our complete video training courses at http://www.focusphotoschool.com. LR002 - Creating a Portable Lightroom Catalog
In this video, we take a look at creating a portable Lightroom catalog. I've used this method to keep my catalog mobile, so I can take my catalog between the Desktop and Laptop, between work and home. This is a fairly simple setup that puts your catalog information and photographs on an external hard drive, rather than hosting all of that data on your computer, bogging your internal hard drive down. UPDATE: Since I've created this video, we've gone from LR 5 to Creative Cloud, but the process is still the same and all the important stuff is still in the same place. Also, since I've created this video I use a little different setup. With a few tweaks you can update to my new system as well, which is: - I keep my catalog on my computer - my photographs on the external - use Smart Previews to edit without the drive connected. I hope you enjoy the videos! More are coming!

Moving Your Photos To A Larger Hard Drive Without Upsetting Lightroom Classic
(FREE TUTORIAL) How To Move Your Photos To A Larger Hard Drive Without Upsetting Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic You would think that moving your entire photo library from a small drive over to a bigger disk would be easy, but for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic users this is actually a rather complex process. In this video tutorial, I am going to show you how to move all of your photos to a larger hard drive without upsetting Lightroom Classic. I need to stress that what I do in this video is not an image backup system. What we are going to do today is to replace one storage device with another. The link below will take you to my in-depth tutorial on how to backup all of your photography and your Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog using external hard drives: https://www.focusphotoschool.com/adobe-photoshop-lightroom/adobe-photoshop-lightroom-setup/lightroom-backup/ As you will see throughout this video, I am going to use a wonderful utility called *Carbon Copy Cloner* for this project. Mac users, follow the link below to download a free trial version of this wonderful software. https://bombich.com/ There is a free utility from Microsoft out there called the *Windows SyncToy* for you PC users that will just fine for this project. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=15155 If you are playing along with the Windows SyncToy then be sure that you nail down the Windows drive letter assignment system for all of your external devices before you begin this project. And be sure to set up a one-way, a left to right, style sync only. Two-way syncing could be disastrous for you Windows users! Finally, I need to warn you that there is an element of risk involved in this process. Moving all of your photos to a larger hard drive without upsetting Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic is nothing to fear but this is serious business.
