He's one of our favorite artists of all time. He played acoustic guitar in front of the Tennessee Two or the Tennessee Three, and he had a really cool style that was pretty bad ass. He would play the acoustic guitar with a flat pick. And he'd often have it down low like this. Sometimes he'd be strumming way up here and then he'd move back here and then he'd move back up here. So that's what you'd see him to live a lot and it's really cool showmanship and it gets the job done in terms of putting the song across. The Sun Studio sessions that were so groundbreaking with the Tennessee Two had something a little different going on. He would take a card and weave it into the strings like this, okay like that, and then he would kind of use it as a percussion instrument because they didn't have a drummer. They had doghouse bass slapping away. Luther Perkins picking on the Telecaster. There was an echo machine, an extra tape machine in the studio that was used for echo, and it was often producing its own sort of rhythmic back beat. So with Johnny hitting on his guitar like that, this kind of acted like the snares that would be hitting against the underside of a snare drum. Some people would call this style of guitar playing sock guitar. You can do the same thing without a card, or you can make some chords, but the focus is on the texture of the pick going across the strings but having that card in there gives it an extra sizzle. So check it out, play along with your favorite Johnny Cash recordings and see if you don't get a little extra rhythm.

"Fraulein" was Bobby Helms debut single on the U.S. country chart, reaching #1 for four weeks and staying on chart for 52 weeks, the sixth longest song in country music history to spend over 50 weeks on the country singles chart. The song's popularity crossed over to the pop chart where "Fraulein" peaked at #36. Jerry Lee Lewis released a version on his 1969 album, Sings the Country Music Hall of Fame Hits, Vol. 2. In 1974, Mickey Gilley also covered the song and released it on his album City Lights. Philippine singer Victor Wood covered this song on the album Memories. Robert Lee Helms (August 15, 1933 – June 19, 1997), known professionally as Bobby Helms, was an American country music singer who enjoyed his peak success in 1957 with the seasonal hit "Jingle Bell Rock". His other hits include "Fraulein" and "My Special Angel". Bobby Helms was born in Bloomington, Indiana. His pioneering contribution to the genre has been recognized by the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Helms spent most of his later years living just outside of Martinsville, Indiana, until his death from emphysema and asthma at the age of 63 in 1997. He was portrayed by actor Brad Hawkins in the 2007 film Crazy. Another record by Helms was "Schoolboy Crush", which was a hit in the UK. It was released in the USA on June 23, 1958 on Decca. The same song was then covered by UK teen star Cliff Richard about the same time as the UK release.

The scene of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville still represents the pinnacle of a career for country artists. Bryan Sutton (http://bit.ly/2E6Xiok) talks history and breaks down one of the most important elements of Bluegrass rhythm: The G Run. Before big ensembles and big bass instruments came into place, rhythmic guitar was the main rhythmic basis for country music and bluegrass. One of these rhythmic techniques that was used in old country and bluegrass music is the G Run. In this lesson, Bryan Sutton isolates that technique. Bill Monroe's recording of Mule Skinner Blues is one of the first recordings of this technique in bluegrass. Another player who used the G run early on was Lester Flatt. Bryan Sutton recommends listening to Lester Flatt. Lester Flatt's G run technique clearly marks the end of each phrase, which is an important role to play when the guitar is in charge of the rhythm. In this lesson, Bryan Sutton discusses many other ways different artists used the G run. Bryan Sutton is an award winning acoustic guitarist.
