School leadership is the process of enlisting and guiding the talents and energies of teachers, pupils, and parents toward achieving common educational aims. The term school leadership came into currency in the late 20th century for several reasons. Demands were made on schools for higher levels of pupil achievement, and schools were expected to improve and reform. These expectations were accompanied by calls for accountability at the school level. Maintenance of the status quo was no longer considered acceptable. Administration and management are terms that connote stability through the exercise of control and supervision. The concept of leadership was favored because it conveys dynamism and pro-activity. The principal or school head is commonly thought to be the school leader; however, school leadership may include other persons, such as members of a formal leadership team and other persons who contribute toward the aims of the school. While school leadership or educational leadership have become popular as replacements for educational administration in recent years, leadership arguably presents only a partial picture of the work of school, division or district, and ministerial or state education agency personnel, not to mention the areas of research explored by university faculty in departments concerned with the operations of schools and educational institutions. For this reason, there may be grounds to question the merits of the term as a catch-all for the field. Rather, the etiology of its use may be found in more generally and con-temporarily experienced neo-liberal social and economic governance models, especially in the United States and the United Kingdom. On this view, the term is understood as having been borrowed from business. In the United States, the superintendency, or role of the chief school administrator, has undergone many changes since the creation of the position—which is often attributed to the Buffalo Common Council that approved a superintendent on June 9, 1837. If history serves us correctly, the superintendency is about 170 years old with four major role changes from the early 19th century through the first half of the 20th century and into the early years of the 21st century. Initially, the superintendent's main function was clerical in nature and focused on assisting the board of education with day-to-day details of running the school. At the turn of the 20th century, states began to develop common curriculum for public schools with superintendents fulfilling the role of teacher-scholar or master educator who had added an emphasis on curricular and instructional matters to school operations. In the early 20th century, the Industrial Revolution affected the superintendent's role by shifting the emphasis to expert manager with efficiency in handling non-instructional tasks such as budget, facility,and transportation. The release of A Nation at Risk in 1983 directly impacted public school accountability and, ultimately, the superintendency. The early 1980s initiated the change that has continued through today with the superintendent viewed as chief executive officer, including the roles of professional adviser to the board, leader of reforms, manager of resources and communicator to the public. The term "educational leadership" is also used to describe programs beyond schools. Leaders in community colleges, proprietary colleges, community-based programs, and universities are also educational leaders.

Transformational leadership is a style of leadership where a leader works with subordinates to identify needed change, creating a vision to guide the change through inspiration, and executing the change in tandem with committed members of a group. Transformational leadership serves to enhance the motivation, morale, and job-performance of followers through a variety of mechanisms; these include connecting the follower's sense of identity and self to a project and to the collective identity of the organization; being a role model for followers in order to inspire them and to raise their interest in the project; challenging followers to take greater ownership for their work, and understanding the strengths and weaknesses of followers, allowing the leader to align followers with tasks that enhance their performance. The concept of transformational leadership was initially introduced by James V. Downton, the first to coin the term "Transformational leadership", a concept further developed by leadership expert and presidential biographer James MacGregor Burns. According to Burns, transformational leadership can be seen when "leaders and followers make each other advance to a higher level of morality and motivation." Through the strength of their vision and personality, transformational leaders are able to inspire followers to change expectations, perceptions, and motivations to work towards common goals. Unlike in the transactional approach, it is not based on a "give and take" relationship, but on the leader's personality, traits and ability to make a change through example, articulation of an energizing vision and challenging goals. Transforming leaders are idealized in the sense that they are a moral exemplar of working towards the benefit of the team, organization and/or community. Burns theorized that transforming and transactional leadership were mutually exclusive styles. Later, researcher Bernard M. Bass expanded upon Burns' original ideas to develop what is today referred to as Bass’ Transformational Leadership Theory. According to Bass, transformational leadership can be defined based on the impact that it has on followers. Transformational leaders, Bass suggested, garner trust, respect, and admiration from their followers. Bernard M. Bass (1985), extended the work of Burns (1978) by explaining the psychological mechanisms that underlie transforming and transactional leadership. Bass introduced the term "transformational" in place of "transforming." Bass added to the initial concepts of Burns (1978) to help explain how transformational leadership could be measured, as well as how it impacts follower motivation and performance. The extent to which a leader is transformational, is measured first, in terms of his influence on the followers. The followers of such a leader feel trust, admiration, loyalty and respect for the leader and because of the qualities of the transformational leader are willing to work harder than originally expected. These outcomes occur because the transformational leader offers followers something more than just working for self-gain; they provide followers with an inspiring mission and vision and give them an identity. The leader transforms and motivates followers through his or her idealized influence (earlier referred to as charisma), intellectual stimulation and individual consideration. In addition, this leader encourages followers to come up with new and unique ways to challenge the status quo and to alter the environment to support being successful. Finally, in contrast to Burns, Bass suggested that leadership can simultaneously display both transformational and transactional leadership. According to Bass, transformational leadership encompasses several different aspects, including: Emphasizing intrinsic motivation and positive development of followers; Raising awareness of moral standards; Highlighting important priorities; Fostering higher moral maturity in followers; Creating an ethical climate (share values, high ethical standards); Encouraging followers to look beyond self-interests to the common good; Promoting cooperation and harmony; Using authentic, consistent means; Using persuasive appeals based on reason;

Dick Brandt is an international consultant, advisor and accomplished public speaker. He has had over 15 years of experience in managing international business operations, while serving in various Vice Presidential positions during a 25-year career at AT&T and Lucent Technologies. International operations for which Mr. Brandt assumed responsibility included all activities associated with sales, project implementation, technical sales support and staff in over 25 countries in Asia, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. These responsibilities led him to direct discussions of international business issues with world leaders such as the former President of the PLO, Yasser Arafat and Jiang Zemin, former President of the PRC. Mr. Brandt also served on the Board of Directors for five international ventures in Singapore, the PRC, India, Poland and Russia. He assumed the position of International Sales Vice President in 1989 and concentrated on opening up the Asia/Pacific market for AT&T starting with Korea and Taiwan. Dick then established several joint ventures and expanded operations to 15 countries in Asia by 1994. During this time, Dick led several hundred sales and support staff with hundreds of millions of dollars in annual sales. In 1970, Dick Brandt began his career as a sales manager for Ohio Bell. Ten years later as a principal consultant for AT&T International in Dublin, Ireland, his international work began with the establishment of AT&T's first international company. Mr. Brandt spent over 14 years living and working overseas, beginning in Ireland and continuing in Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands. Dick has been employed by Lehigh University for the past 17 years. He serves as the Director of the Iacocca Institute in the Office of the Vice President of International Affairs, and has been the Director of the renowned Global Village Program for Future Leaders of Business and Industry for 14 years. The Global Village Program delivers its learning through interactive courses, multi-cultural teaming experiences, business and organizational visits, executive round table discussions, themed panel and seminar sessions. Since its inception, this program has welcomed 1661 young leaders from 131 countries - all of whom are part of the Global Village worldwide alumni network. In addition to delivering the International Business courses at The Iacocca Institute at Lehigh University, Mr. Brandt has also taught Business One for eight years at Lehigh's College of Business and Economics. Entrepreneurial leadership is effectively using the skills associated with successful individual entrepreneurs and applying those within the environment of a larger organisation. This especially means within an organisation where those skills have been lost and replaced with a "corporate" mindset that focuses on process, systems and risk minimisation rather than on entrepreneurial behaviour. Other definitions of entrepreneurial leadership have also emerged: The entrepreneurial leader executes through inspiration and aligns relationships to achieve common goals. An entrepreneurial leader will proactively identify opportunities to gain advantage through creativity, innovation and market understanding and then hold themselves responsible for delivering what customers need via the effective management of risk to optimise outcomes for both the organization and the customer. The entrepreneurial leader will work within a formalised organisational structure, but use the approaches normally expected of an entrepreneur to identify opportunities. Once an opportunity has been identified, they work towards creating a value proposition which will enable a rapid testing of their key assumptions. Next to an effective management of risk (rather than the minimisation of risk often sought within corporate environments), they are required to operate with contextual awareness in order to create a value proposition that delivers value to the customer while taking into account the organisational requirements and strategic aims. The entrepreneurial leader must have the ability to learn fast and within environments of ambiguity and change, while providing clarity and coherence for those around them. The entrepreneurial leader takes responsibility for their actions and those actions must be more proactive than reactive. They think about achieving organisational outcomes in an innovative way and working with a diverse group of people and resources to achieve these goals. Perhaps the best known and most widely considered example of an entrepreneurial leader is Steve Jobs, but there are many real life examples in the world of business and other industries, such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Richard Branson.

What is your leadership style? Are you a get-it-done type or a caring, relationship builder? Are you touchy feely, go-with-your gut person or a cautious, information gatherer? Are you direct, often interpreted as blunt, or more emotional, viewed as wishy-washy? Knowing your leadership style is important to your success in both your business and personal lives. In business, it enables you to leverage your talent and seek out the right new hires to complement the leadership styles of your current management team. There is no right or wrong style, and the combination you choose for your business can be the 'make or brake' of achieving your goals. Using the DISC profiles, as an example, here are two aspects of leadership styles. Graphed on this chart, we have the two extremes of communication styles -- casual and formal -- plotted against personality types -- extroverted and introverted. Each of the four DISC types is placed in a quadrant. Casual communicators tend to use less formal language, include feelings in the discussion and seem less articulate when speaking. Formal communicators, on the other hand, use fewer words, come across as more direct and always have their i's dotted and t's crossed before weighing in. Likewise, extroverts and introverts have very different styles. Extroverts are the talkers who speak as they process thoughts, while introverts are considered good listeners because they observe more than they verbalize. Dominant styles are more results-based and direct while Supportive types are all about relationships and people. Inspiring leaders are all about the why, often making decisions based on emotions and feelings. Their opposites, Cautious personalities, are all about the information, and often put off making decisions until they have collected enough data. Now let's look at how these characteristics play out in a boardroom... The company's leader is a Dominant, both extroverted and formal. He begins a meeting that was scheduled weeks before but may or may not have told anyone else what the agenda is. In the meeting, he dives straight to the deliverables and action items because spending time on small talk and relationship building is a waste, not to mention annoying. He knows exactly what he wants from everyone and assumes that they do to - telling the team what will happen, not by asking for input or getting buy-in. The Supportive people are quietly feeling uncared for and unloved with their leader's abrupt start. They smile and nod while trying not to let on because they want the best for the leader and the organization, and are ready to contribute. They also secretly wonder if the leader is having a tough time personally and maybe he just needs a hug later. The Cautious people are sitting with their arms crossed and not going to play along because there is no agenda to define the meeting and therefore they are not prepared with meaningful input. They are insulted they weren't asked to weigh in with their expertise and research, but aren't about to put their neck out and look stupid. The Inspiring types are talking about their weekend regardless of the agenda, interrupting the Dominant leader and excited to be out of their cubicle and in a room full of other people! They aren't as concerned about where the company is going as they are in getting there together and the social events that will happen along the way. Sound like your office? Of course, this is an oversimplification of the personality profiling and leadership team design process, but it gives you an understanding of how your leadership style affects your working relationships. The concept of “authenticity” can trace its history back to ancient Greece. Ancient Greek philosophers stressed authenticity as an important state through an emphasis on being in control of one’s own life and the ubiquitous admonition: “Know thyself”. Authentic leadership as we know it today evolved from the history of these terms. It originated in the 1960s as a means to describe how an organization reflects itself authentically through leadership. Some believed that an entire organization could act authentically like a single person can through responsibility, reactions to uncertainty, and creativity. Others believed that authentic leadership is actually more about how the leaders define their own role within an organization. Recently, authentic leadership has garnered more attention among scholars and practitioners because of publications from Harvard professor and former Medtronic CEO Bill George and other calls for research. The past decade has seen a surge in publications about authentic leadership, producing new models, definitions, and theories. The emphasis on conceptual development suggest that the concept is still in the initial stages of construct evolution, though as the scholarly research on the topic progresses, the types of publications produced appear to be shifting from mostly conceptual pieces to more and more empirically based articles. This shift may be indicative of a nascent emergence of the construct from an introduction and elaboration evolutionary stage to one marked by evaluation and augmentation. Because the concept itself is not yet fully mature in a theoretical sense, there are many different definitions of authentic leadership, each with its own nuances. However, consensus appears to be growing that authentic leadership includes these distinct qualities: 1. Self-awareness: An ongoing process of reflection and re-examination by the leader of his or her own strength, weaknesses, and values; 2. Relational Transparency: Open sharing by the leader of his or her own thoughts and beliefs, balanced by a minimization of inappropriate emotions; 3. Balanced Processing: Solicitation by the leader of opposing viewpoints and fair-minded consideration of those viewpoints; 4. Internalized Moral Perspective: A positive ethical foundation adhered to by the leader in his or her relationships and decisions that is resistant to outside pressures. There is empirical research that supports a superordinate construct of authentic leadership that includes these four components. It should be noted, however, that this evidence has been called into question as a result of reporting statistically impossible results. Other papers by the same authors have been retracted for similar problems and the inability of the authors to produce evidence of their claims.-...
