My name is Trudi Tapscott, and I think if you're interested in modeling, the first thing that you know is that models are tall and skinny. So, the first question is, "How tall and how skinny do I have to be?" And the answer is, depending upon the type of modeling that you're doing, height is important and being skinny, in good shape and healthy are important. No one in the business that is a legitimate agent is going to tell you to starve yourself, but if you photographically, on film, don't look good, then that's something that needs to be talked about. Maybe you need to lose 5 pounds. Maybe you're retaining salt. But, really, it goes by measurement more than weight, because it's a fit issue. So, you have to be able to fit the clothes. So, if you're not in the size that you can fit into the clothes, then the designer can't hire you because there's only one. It's not like you go to the department store and there's all sizes. There's one size and there's one look. They are trying to sell that look to all the buyers all around the world so that they can produce it. So, that's why the fashion show is six months in advance; they need to know what's going to sell, what's of interest to people, what they like. So, that's been created and designed and it's a certain size. Height, the clothes, the length of a model, the proportion of a model is what a designer is looking for. What a casting director is looking for. So, height is important. If you're talking about shows, the reason it's important is because everyone's in a line and there's other people involved. It's not just you. If you can be anywhere from 5"9' to 6"0' feet, that's a pretty big variation, but you're still tall. That's still taller than the average person. At least, in America, that's taller than the average person. So, modeling is not the average. You're not supposed to be average. You're supposed to be something that people look at in sort of a fantasy of what beauty is. So, you have to be thin and you have to be tall. Those are the things that matter in the business. But you also have to be healthy. You could be a tall, thin girl, but there are thin people that look too thin. Some people, their body is naturally thin. If your body is not naturally thin, you can't starve yourself to be that skinny person. It all goes back to what type of model are you. Because if you are someone who's going model athletic clothes, then you don't want to be as skinny as the model who's modeling fashion, because you don't look necessarily athletic. So, I think that there's two things that are not true about models when it comes to weight. And that is that they don't eat and they starve themselves. I think that they limit their intake when it's before a fashion show season. I think during show season they're so busy they don't have a lot time to eat, so they get thinner. But when they're shooting pictures, nobody wants to see someone who you can see their bones when they're shooting lingerie or bathing suits. So, it's about being a healthy, tall, thin, beautiful woman.

Editorial vs. Commercial Modeling | Modeling

They actually really identify different types of clients, not different types of models. In our industry, the terms have been very interchangeable for years. So it's actually evolved that somebody will refer to you as a model as more commercial or more editorial. The confusing part about that is that then you think you're only one thing. So as a model, you need to take it with just a little bit of a grain of salt because it is someone's vision of you. They're sort of categorizing you. The real difference in the term is commercial modeling is if you're modeling for a brand like Diet Coke, or McDonald's, or the department store, or like Walgreens, or something that is more sort of common in a way, they're looking for the girl next door who doesn't look anything too distinctively different. She could be anybody. Kool-Aid, all sorts of things, orange juice, whatever. Editorial relates really to fashion. That is the girl who specifically has a body line that is specific. She's only selling clothes or cosmetics. Editorial is the term that actually refers to the inside pages of a magazine. When you shoot for that magazine, you get a tear sheet, which is tearing out the magazine page. That's editorial, the inside where there's no writing. It's just the most beautiful pictures in a magazine. That's editorial. That's what creates your image. That's what everybody wants. For fashion models in editorial, it goes hand in hand. That's exactly what it is. Commercial and commercial modeling is a little bit different. The terms are very interchangeable when you're identifying someone. You could be more cheerleader looking, more all-American looking. Those are terms that fall under sort of the commercial kind of girl. Fashion, editorial, something a little bit distinctively different. It doesn't look like the average person. That's kind of the difference between the two.

How to Become a Victoria's Secret Model | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! The Self-Made Model: Success Without Agencies: http://amzn.to/1VHJ8bs Picture Perfect Posing: Practicing the Art of Posing: http://amzn.to/1N2krnG The Business of Professional Modeling: http://amzn.to/1WQ75iZ The Professional's Guide to Modeling: http://amzn.to/1jeLGls Become a Successful Commercial Model: http://amzn.to/1OoNzY2 Watch more How to Be a Model videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512609-How-to-Become-a-Victorias-Secret-Model-Modeling Victoria's Secret is a brand that I think everyone wants to work for. The thing about Victoria's Secret that is so exceptional is that they have developed the brand of what they sell around the personalities of the models that represent their brand. Not everybody does that, and so what makes Victoria's Secret special is we have fewer and fewer magazines over the last decade that create a presence for a model where you see name and face recognition. During the era of supermodel status, they had covers of magazines. They were on the cover of American "Vogue". We knew their names. We knew who they were. They were personalities. A model wasn't a blank canvas that nobody knew who she was. So, that has been distanced from the business a little bit, and Victoria's Secret marketed themselves in the way that creates an image for a model through the model's image also. They allowed the models to have personalities. They wanted to see their story. They market it through their fashion show, everything about models and the brand and what they sell, and created a really fun brand that everybody wants to work for. So, what I hear all the time is, "What do I have to do to be a Victoria's Secret model?" First you have to be 18 years of age. They work with women. You have to be in impeccably great shape. Because they are in such demand, they offer lucrative contracts. They treat models really well. They shoot a lot throughout the years. So, it's a great company to work for because if they like you, you stay busy. But I think that because the status of the brand is so elevated that they want models who have fashion images as well. I think that Victoria's Secret goes way beyond being a lingerie company. It's sort of a state of mind, and so what ends up happening is they have the opportunity to be incredibly picky. They do a lot of media. You have to be able to speak about products. You have to be able to sell products. I think that being a Victoria's Secret girl is you are completely immersed in the brand on every single level, and that is not as easy as it sounds. I think that it's very demanding and just the workout routine by itself is demanding. There is this constant need for physical perfection because of what you're selling. So, I think that being a Victoria's Secret model is the goal of every girl I talk to. It's funny; very rarely do they say, "Oh, it's this magazine, or it's this or this." It's like, "I want to work for Victoria's Secret." So, it's a great goal to have, and it's hard to get. It's not easy.

Can You Model If You're Short? | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! I'm Trudi Tapscott, and there's always something that you want to do that maybe you don't have the requirements to do. And modeling, you have to be taught. So, it's unfortunate because models are idolized and everyone thinks it's such the dream job. And sometimes it is the dream job, but it does have physical requirements. And, being on the slight side, you're not going to walk on the runway for Dior in Paris if you're 5'6". For a long time in America, there was petite modeling, so to speak, because brands had developed petite categories, or petite fits, but there's really no such thing as a career. And, I think that that's a misnomer. Sometimes, in local markets, if you're smaller you can model, but you're never going to model on an international stage unless you meet the height requirements. And there is no difference between photography and reality. Even in photography, you have to be the right proportion and be tall enough. And also, because sometimes you have to stand next to somebody, so it's just the reality that everybody needs to be around the same height. And, when you measure yourself, you have to measure yourself flat-footed, not how tall you are in high heels.

How to Find a Modeling Agency for Kids | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! My name is Trudi Tapscott, and I think that every parent, at some point, is curious about getting their kid into modeling. And by kid, I refer to children under the age of 12. And even newborns. People send pictures. They want their baby to be a model, or do modeling. I encourage everyone to have their moral code, and my moral code is, I wouldn't encourage your children to be in a business where their complete focus is on their exterior. For me, personally, I don't represent children models. I've never worked in a kids modeling agency. It's not just how a kid looks. It's really whether that kid can adapt and be safe in that world and not completely focus on getting their picture taken and all of those things. So, it's a different kind of a thing. Kids are pretty impressionable. So, for me, I never really was interested in working in that area of the business. I will say that for parents that want to get their kids into modeling, like everything, get a great agent. But you need to be near a market, and you're the full-time person there. They obviously don't go to anything by themselves; you have to drive them everywhere. You go on a lot of auditions to get a job. It's a lot of work. Nobody advances you any money for your kid to be a model, so it's much different than the adult business. And so parents usually become the driving force for their children in being child models. And if you're a successful child model, they go by sizes, so usually a kid that's small for their age works more as a model, so it's the opposite of the adult business. If a client books babies, they book maybe eight babies on that day because you never know who's going to be in a good mood. So, you don't know if your kid is going to be the one that gets it. You go to all the trouble and take everything and you go there and your baby that day is in a bad mood, or is teething, or whatever. There's a million different things that happen that a director or photographer have to keep in mind with children. And you have to keep your children occupied. They don't necessarily know that they're working, so it's a working thing. There are some excellent kid's agents in Los Angeles and in New York, and I think that if you don't live in a huge city, you're not going to get huge rewards from children modeling in the business. The big jobs, the things that matter, all happen in big cities. So proceed with caution, I would say. You're obviously concerned about your child and their welfare. If they're not responding or adapting well, if they don't feel comfortable, if you're the one dragging them, if they're not excited to do it, then maybe wait, or don't do it at all. Maybe it's not their thing, but proceed with caution. You can see very early on whether it's something that they're really enjoying and having a good time, and that's the most important thing.

Weight & Height for Runway Modeling | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! My name is Trudi Tapscott, and fashion modeling has some very specific physical requirements. And I say that, that you do have to be a certain height, and you do have to be, I would not necessarily say weight, but I would say a certain measurement shape. You need to fit clothes that are designed by a designer, and modeling is a job, so there are specifics. Just like sports, just like anything else, there is a physical form that you need in order to sell designer clothes. The requirements are preferably 5'9" and taller. Measurements, 34 or 35 hip, sample size, which is changing. Sometimes it's a little smaller than it should be, depending upon the brand and the designer. So, you need to have measurements that are pretty much 34-24-34. That varies. A girl who is 5'9" is going to have a different sizing, different shape, different proportions than a girl who is 5'11". But, the range is between 5'9" up to 6 feet. There are girls who are taller than 6 feet. It does make it more difficult. Sleeves are shorter, pants are shorter, but that's pretty much it. There are exceptions to every single rule, and those kinds of requirements are for New York, Paris, Milan, London, big markets were modeling is a career. Sometimes in smaller markets, there is a generosity and a little bit of leeway in terms of what clients are looking for, because it's a different kind of modeling. And when I say there are exceptions to every rule, there are models who have modeled and have had great careers who are 5'7", 5'8", but your best chances are 5'9" and taller.

How to Put Together Modeling Portfolio | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! My name's Trudi Tapscott, and the model's tool is her portfolio. That is the first thing people want to see. That's the proof of what you've done on the job. That's what you have to show clients. They want to see variety. A misconception when you're starting is like, "Oh my gosh I did a test shoot and there's 20 pictures that are great." Well the 20 pictures are great, but they're also shot by the same photographer in the same light with the same style, same hair and makeup. It doesn't show much variety. So, as judging whether you're good in front of the camera, you would love every shot to be usable. So, that's fantastic that every shot was usable but not every shot is great. So, the job of agents and photographers is to edit down what's really great and what really sells you and what is the best picture. So, in the beginning in a models portfolio you could have two or three pictures in the beginning. That's all anybody sees and they might be all from the same photographer. You might have a head shot, a full length, a bathing suit shot, and maybe something in jean shorts and that is your variety because that's all you've done. But as times goes on a portfolio shows variety of lots of different things and if you don't love having your picture taken, then you don't want to be a model because your test book, portfolio, should be a variety of different photographers. It could be any number of shoots, and you could have just one picture from each shoot that you're done. Obviously, the traditional way is when you open a portfolio you want to see a models head shot. That's the first thing you want to see. That head shot can be a different flavor for different people but it's the best head shot that markets you And then, as you continue along in a portfolio, if you're just starting out and you're trying to get the attention of clients and agents and people, I always say simple is best. Anything that's too much make up, too over accessorized, your test shots are to sell you. It's a portfolio; the pictures aren't selling anything but you. Your clothes are your own wardrobe, the accessories are your own thing, it's your own shoes. You're not selling anything but your ability to be a model. So, it's best not to cloud your ability to be a model by covering things up. Less is usually best. And you want different settings. You want to see you in different situations. To see you in a park, to see you in a studio against a plain white wall, to see you modeling dresses, to see you modeling bathing suits, to see you modeling jean shorts, jeans. All that variety, because every client you go to see, they want to be able to relate to you for their brand, for their job, for what they're booking you for. So, it's always better, it's easier for them, if they actually see it or some version of it in your book. So, if you just have one or two pictures it becomes difficult for them to imagine it. And someone with more experience is going to have more pictures and so they might get the job instead of you. So, it's all that kind of a process and you are learning how to model and you are learning that through taking pictures. So, if every time your agent calls and says we want you to do a test shoot, well what's it for? Well it's for you. It's for your book. It's to put together material that people can see so you can get experience. Be enthusiastic about doing test shoots because it's fun.

How to Get Signed by NYC Model Agency | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! The Self-Made Model: Success Without Agencies: http://amzn.to/1VHJ8bs Picture Perfect Posing: Practicing the Art of Posing: http://amzn.to/1N2krnG The Business of Professional Modeling: http://amzn.to/1WQ75iZ The Professional's Guide to Modeling: http://amzn.to/1jeLGls Become a Successful Commercial Model: http://amzn.to/1OoNzY2 Watch more How to Be a Model videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/512618-How-to-Get-Signed-by-NYC-Model-Agency-Modeling Hi. My name is Trudi Tapscott. I worked as an agent in New York for many, many years, and I think that New York agents are very specific about whose going to work in New York. New York is really the starting point for longterm careers. Everyone's looking for longevity because they're investing a lot of time and money in you, to help you get started. No one wants to do that if someone's just going to model for a year. That's not very interesting because the money takes a little bit of time. Getting the attention of a New York agent is not that difficult if you are exactly what they are looking for. There's the answer in a nutshell. If you have what they want, then you've got their attention and it's really easy. Sometimes, potential isn't so obvious. There's a lot of times that a New York agent might not have time to really see all the possibilities and maybe use a model. Maybe you need to a lose a little weight. Maybe you need to gain a little weight. Maybe your skin isn't so great. Maybe your hair is wrong. When you're young, you have a little bit of baby fat in your face that makes you photograph in a certain way. There's so many elements that go into it. Sometimes, it's just somebody has a bad day. Some agencies in New York have what is called an "open call" where anybody can walk in the door. People are human. They could be in a hurry. They could be working on an huge booking for somebody. Your potential isn't obvious at that particular moment and they don't have time so they move on. It's like, "No thanks. We're not interested," whatever. If you knew how many models in the industry, who are top models today, who got missed in their first time being introduced to someone, it's shocking. It does go to show that the development period doesn't always happen just because you're in New York and modeling full-time. Sometimes, the development period happens just when you are at home and you are learning. You can watch fashion shows online. There is so much information that is available to you by looking at websites, looking at modeling agency websites. What kind of pictures do they pick for the models? What do their portfolios look like? What does MODELS.com write about models? There are so many sources of information that is valid from valid people that actually interview legit people. That's how you can tell if someone does an interview with a website, chances are it's a legit thing if it's somebody who is really in the business. You know that if they're actually speaking on film and it's not the written word, that it's real, that they're talking. It's their name. It's their face, and you can find out about them. The fact of the matter is that maybe you need to do a little more homework. Maybe you need to work a little bit harder at it. Maybe you need to do some of those things. Maybe you need to actually get smart, do some research, look at those pictures and see what those models have. It can be kind of an obsessive adventure in a way, and maybe it leads you to another kind of position in the fashion industry. I think everybody grows up and they think, "Oh, I'm perfect for modeling." You're tall. Everybody says, "Oh, you're so tall, you should be a model." If it was the only requirement that a New York agent was looking for was you being tall, then there'd be a lot more models out there. It's not the only thing they are looking for. The industry itself is a big industry, and there are lots of people who might have tried modeling. They started out as a model, and they didn't like it. It wasn't for them, their personality. They didn't like being in a different place everyday. There are tons of things. There are lots of reasons why it doesn't work for you personally. But they ended up being a stylist assistant or they decided to go into makeup or they decided they wanted to go to FIT and study design. In some ways, it can be an entrance into a completely different world than what you're learning. If it's a business that you are interested in, if you are interested in fashion, modeling is a great way to start.

What is the Ideal Height and Weight for Male Models?
A male model should typically be between 5'10 to 6'3, however there are several models outside of this height range that are doing really well, for instance Luka Sabbat and Ian Connor are both below 5'10 but they've been seen on Kanye West's Yeezy show during the New York Fashion Week. Typically suit size for male models are between size 38-40, however Topman are some other clothing labels prefer models between 34-36 suit size. Male Models should typically have an athletic body type with a body fat percentage of 5-10 percentage, however models like Zach Miko break the boundaries and show us that these are merely general guides and not a standard.

First of all, most of the time it's not full-time. It can be, but it's usually not a full-time job. And it's usually a place where you're learning, but the requirements are different to get a job. Clients in those markets that are paying you money really want you to know how to walk on a runway. They don't want first-timers. So, as you're learning how to do your job, you will find that sometimes being a little bit smaller is okay. You can get away with it at five-eight. Your requirements are not so tight. Clients are looking for different things in different markets wherever you go, and so if you're starting your first experience in a market like Birmingham, Alabama, let's say, it's a small town. Probably the jobs you're going to do are fashion shows in the mall. There are probably not very many magazines. You're going to work for newspapers, as opposed to magazines. The type of modeling you do is different, so the requirements are different. So, sometimes since you're modeling clothes that come from the department store, not necessarily do you need to be sample-sized, so that's a little bit different. Sometimes if you're too tall, if you're 6 feet in Birmingham, Alabama, you probably won't work, the same way that if you were coming to New York, that might be exactly what they're looking for. It is all determined on the market that you're in, if you are the right look for those clients. Somebody who doesn't work in Birmingham, Alabama because they're not right might be just the person that an agent in New York is looking for. So, it's a good place to start. It's a good learning ground. It's nice to make your mistakes and learn your job when not everybody is looking at you. So, if you're learning how to take pictures, I'm a big believer that learning in your hometown is a good place to start if you're not spending a lot of money. Sometimes, because a client would like you to know how to walk, you have to learn how to walk somewhere. If you're in New York City, your agents, the casting director, the designer, people will give you a chance to learn how to walk on a runway. In a local market, they want you to look like a pro from the second you start. So there, is a whole entire business that has been created in these smaller markets where you need to go to a modeling school and you need to learn how to walk, how to put on your own makeup. And that's not necessarily true. So, you don't need to spend a lot of money to learn how to do it, but you have to have some skills. It's the same thing that if you wanted to go and audition for a TV commercial, you would need to know how to feel comfortable in the environment going on a casting for a TV commercial. You need to know how that filming process works. Modeling is kind of the same way, but there has been a whole business created where people will ask you for money when you may never, ever work as a model. So, you need to know that you're actually going to work as a model, and then it's worth making an investment because you're making a business investment in yourself.

Fashion Model Tips - 4 Quick Steps to Getting Started in Fashion Modeling for Beginners
Learn more at http://www.bobpardue.com Steps to How to Become a Fashion Model If you have been attracted to show business, then you probably know how to become a fashion model by observing top stars perform on the big screen. However, there is a lot more to the world of modeling than you can imagine. It can leave you grounded without a clue as to what went wrong. Worry about "How" - Not "Why" You may lose money and waste precious time trying to understand how the industry works. However, mastering some basic steps and techniques will help you get a solid start. It becomes easier to understand how to sustain a career in modeling no matter if you are a teenager or a model over 18 who is just about past the runway stage. Planning Pays Plan your look in advance. Even though you may not have professional capabilities to change your look without help, develop a basic idea of what works in your case. For example, browse through different photographs taken over the years and make a collection of those holding most appeal. Get Other People Involved Your guardians, friends, or colleagues can help you compile the collection. Hire a professional photographer to create the perfect look without many changes in terms of make-up or hairdo. Your portfolio should also contain other details including physical attributes, qualifications, and interests. Find an Agency Opt for the easy way to understanding by choosing a good agent to represent you. Right from approaching a modeling agency to directly handling client assignments, the agent is with you all the way. It does take some time to find a comfort zone in dealing with an agent, so the earlier you begin the better you get at managing your career. Other areas where agents can help include introducing you to successful models, professional photographers, fashion show organizers, and the media. Well-known management companies in your city often need new female models to campaign for projects determined by client requirements. Go through local newspaper advertisements for casting calls, and ensure your portfolio reaches the agency much before deadline. Or, if you believe you really have the look of a supermodel, you can check with some of the top list companies who cater to the very best. These include Ford, IMG and Elite There are many others to help you get started in modeling as a beginner. You may need some two-way communication to understand requirements. Even after you begin to learn the business you will still have to go through several processes before an agency can commit to promote your interests. What Do You Really Want? Identify areas of interest you would like to pursue in your modeling career. Your physical attributes, for example, height may determine whether you can walk the ramp. There are other areas of modeling to pursue besides fashion and runway. Read through magazines that interest you to understand requirements for different jobs. Early preparation will prepare you well for further assignments. It's Work - And, You Might Have to Travel Yes, modeling can be a fun profession but it takes a girl or guy with a special ability and work ethic to succeed. Find articles and biographies of other talent who can teach you how to cope with working long hours. Models often have to live out of a suitcase. They are constantly traveling and learning to adjust on a daily basis. Preparing yourself accordingly will help your entry into a lucrative modeling career. How to Begin Learn how to start modeling by taking up local assignments. You will need the experience to build up confidence to hopefully move into more lucrative national and international assignments as a successful model. And this does not guarantee you will hit the "big time". Learn to Accept "No" No assignment is small or big when you first begin your career. Also, rejection is part of the learning curve. The Fashion Models Starving For Success
Bones Of Contention (2007): Can the fashion industry amend the body-image crises many young women suffer, or is beauty truly a matter of life and death on the catwalks? The fashion industry claims it is being unfairly pillaged for the ‘size 0’ phenomenon. But self regulation has done little to weed out emaciated models. “They have to understand that being thin is our job”, states one size 0 model. But following the death of anorexic model, Ana Carolina Reston, designers are coming under pressure not to use skinny models. Spain banned ultra-thin models from Madrid Fashion Week after complaints they encouraged anorexia. “We didn’t want teenagers to think excessive slimness is a model of beauty”, explains organizer Cuca Solana. But other fashion capitals refuse to follow Spain’s lead. “The whole size 0 thing has come from Hollywood not the catwalks”, complains Hilary Riva, Chief Executive of London Fashion Week. “It’s too simplistic to blame fashion.” SBS Australia - Ref.3432 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. 4 Biggest Headshot Mistakes | Modeling

I'm Trudi Tapscott, and you need a great head shot. The problem when doing this is that sometimes people want to show too much in a head shot. So, there have been some crazy head shots that I've seen over the years where you can't oversell it. Let's put it that way. There's not too much you can do. The head shot really is just showing you. So, nobody wants to see crazy, big hair. Nobody wants to see way too much makeup. I don't want to see a red lip. If the one thing I see in the picture is not you, then you've gone down the wrong road. If I look at the picture and all I see is bright red lipstick, then I missed you. I didn't see you, and I'm going to remember the picture for the bright red lipstick, and that's all I'm going to remember. And the same goes with the hair, bows in the hair, things in the hair. Never, in my opinion, in my experience, never look like you're trying too hard. Don't try too hard. Don't try too hard in the pictures. You're never going to look like you're modeling in New York. Your picture's never going to look like a head shot that a New York photographer did. So, all you're doing is doing the best you can do with what you've got at that particular time. But if you try to do your hair to look like a model, if you try to do your makeup to look like a model, you're not looking like a model. You want it to be clean and fresh, and I want to see you. That's what happens in a head shot. In a head shot for a model is a series of things. The head shot is just the beginning. Actors, they have a head shot and a resume, and that's all they have. Models have a variety of things. So, if an actor has a head shot and a resume, then you go on an audition. If a model has a head shot and a book full of pictures, she's going to go on an audition, but the audition is different. People might not even look at the book because they saw the head shot, and they're not interested. So, it has to be something that's interesting. And if it's a head shot that you're trying to get an agent, less is best because they're looking at you. They're not looking at anything else. So no distractions, nothing in the background that's distracting, no wild wallpaper in the background. Very simple, clean daylight, good light, indoor light that you can actually see, nothing that's too dark. Simple, that's what you want to do. The focus has to be on you and how you photograph.

How to Walk on a Runway | Modeling
Hearing the call of the catwalk? You gotta work - do your homework! I'm Trudi Tapscott, and one of the most exciting parts of modeling is walking on a runway. And it is an art form. I think the basics of walking is learning where to position your weight, where to position your shoulders. It's very relaxed. You have to keep your body straight, your neck is straight, your shoulders are straight. You have to remember that you are showing clothes, and you have to also remember specifically who you are walking for. Because, there is kind of different walks. But, the basics are, you want to keep your shoulders back, your hips forward, and your feet straight. Which all sounds really easy in the beginning, but once you really start walking and putting all the moving parts together, it's really difficult. You have to keep your weight a little bit forward, you don't want to put all the weight on your heel. You want to look like you are gliding. Your face is completely relaxed, like you're not thinking about it and it's second nature, and you're not singing the words to the song, which is also something that happens in the beginning. Balance their stride, balance their weight, and keep the shift of their body and their arms to their sides. If you swing your arms too much, it's a huge distraction. So, you want to keep everything really simple and walk very basically. It's very simple, it's very balanced, and it's in high heels. And the way you practice this at home, if you want to become confident in learning how to walk as a model, you put a full length mirror at the end of your hall. Hopefully, it's just a flat surface, and you walk back and forth. When a model first comes to New York, that is all they do, is just keep practicing. You have models come in the agency all the time, and they are critiqued. Different agents go and watch them, how they walk in certain heels, walking in a variety of high heels. Sometimes at shows at the last minute, you don't get the perfect size of shoe, so you have to learn to walk in different sizes, because at the very end of the day, you have to be able to start and finish the runway with whatever you have on, and make it look great. Knowing that you are walking from your head to your toe, that it's very straight but it's balanced, keeping your arms to your sides, that's what really makes a great walk. And no one knows how to do that without practicing. Walking is one of the key things that you have to practice, that you have to practice all the time.
