Re: What is the role of fashion in society?
"Fashion is a great historical marker," Posen says. Well fashion is a great historical marker. I mean you can really see what's happening in history, and the ideals of the time through fashion. I mean it's like painting or music, or when you listen to Baroque music and you see the art influence in it. I mean I think we're living in a time right now of incredible . . . where artists have to be cultural receive dishes, and you have to filter all the ______. There's many references. Fast Fashion’s Effect on People, The Planet, & You | Patrick Woodyard | TEDxUniversityofMississippi
Mindful business: While working for a microfinance firm in Trujillo, Peru, Patrick was introduced to the broken Peruvian footwear industry made up of over 100,000 shoemakers who possess remarkable talent yet lack access to consistent work, fair-wages, and brand access to established international markets. Having had extensive exposure to such potential juxtaposed with a lack of access in other developing countries, Patrick developed a vision to push the fashion industry in a new direction by serving as one of the first fashion brands to deliver a superior yet ethically-produced product to consumers. Patrick is the Co-Founder & CEO of Nisolo. Patrick graduated from the Croft Institute for International Studies and Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College at the University of Mississippi. His experience using business as a force for good has led him across the globe ranging from Kenya and Uganda to Argentina and Peru. 20 Ideas: New Role Models in Society
Man lives in a society and cannot live outside society, so we need to teach people how to work reciprocally with society in a way that one will always feel safe as we give and receive in the right way. Finding this balance with society helps a person for their entire life. We don't really have any role models for this at the moment because people don't understand the system of connections between ourselves and nature. This is something we need to learn. We don't have a role model for learning this and that is why the world is in crisis at the moment.

Fashion shoppers [What Europe does for you]
Do you love shopping for clothes? Even if you are a dedicated follower of fashion, you may not be aware of the impact that EU laws have on the fashion items you buy. The textile and clothing sector plays an important role in European manufacturing, and EU laws ensure the quality standards of products sold on the European market. EU law means that something labelled as pure silk is not a cheap copy, and puts rules place on footwear manufacture, helping to protect your interests as a consumer and making sure the goods you buy aren't fakes. The Business of Beauty is Very Ugly | Carrie Hammer | TEDxSantaBarbara
Fashion designer Carrie Hammer was shocked to discover the techniques the fashion and beauty industries employ to sell products. She fills us in on the real harm that these do to our psyches and proposes some smart solutions. Carrie Hammer started her career as an advertising sales executive and often heard that she should “dress for the job she wanted not the job she had.” This was tough advice to follow as she found a limited selection of fashionable, professional women’s clothing with a contemporary fit. As a solution, she felt she had no choice but to start a line to cater to the underserved professional woman. CARRIE HAMMER launched in 2012 in New York City to critical acclaim to deliver stylish professional wear to women. Hammer’s passion extends beyond fashion to empowering women inside and outside of the workplace. This was exemplified in her debut fashion show during New York’s Fashion Week in February, 2014 where she featured “Role Models Not Runway Models,” and included the first ever model in a wheelchair on the runway. Hammer and her clothing line have been featured on CNBC, Fox Business News, Forbes, Good Morning America, Elle, Marie Claire, and Cosmopolitan, to name a few. Who inspires you? Why heroes, role models, and mentors matter | Dyan deNapoli | TEDxDrewMiddleSchool
Who inspires you? Is there someone in your life within your circle of family and friends who know just what to say to motivate you to do great things? Or maybe it is the story of someone whom you never met, but their experience inspires you to pursue something greater in your life? In this TED talk, Dyan deNapoli, the Penguin Lady, shares her experiences, her heroes and role models, and describes why finding the right motivation matters. While she was the Senior Penguin Aquarist at the New England Aquarium, Dyan deNapoli hand-raised dozens of penguin chicks, presented daily programs about penguins to aquarium visitors, and traveled the globe to work with penguin researchers in the field. Now, as head of her own educational company, she frequently writes on penguin topics and has served as the onboard penguin expert and guest lecturer on cruise ships visiting the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica. She estimates she has taught about 250,000 people in the US and abroad about penguins. END OF LIFE - Redressing the Body: A Panel Discussion and Fashion Showcase
https://www.letsreimagine.org As part of the Reimagine End of Life Week series of events, the FIT Fashion Design MFA program hosts a discussion on burial garments. Burial rituals vary significantly from culture to culture around the world, but most involve dressing or covering the body with cloth or adorning it with jewels and paint. In this panel, fashion designers and academics will discuss personal or cultural rituals of dressing the body to memorialize the deceased and allow a respectful passage from life. Join us for a captivating conversation with fashion designers and academics hosted by Fashion Design MFA program. The conversation will highlight how their work weaves together personal stories, memory, and loss. In addition, students from the Fashion Design MFA program at FIT will showcase original designs commissioned specifically for this event, which draw from their own cultural background. Together we will unpack the role of dress in rituals of death and memory. Big questions of gender, race, and class, and how all of these play into (end-of-) life experiences will be woven into the discussion. After the event, guests are invited to a presentation of specially commissioned fashion showcase by the graduate students from the Fashion Design MFA program.
Christian Dior The Man Behind the Myth
It’s 1947. France is in the midst of reconstruction after the war. Although fabrics are being rationed, a young designer wins the world over to his daring vision of feminine elegance. He once again establishes Paris as the capitol of fashion. His name, Christian Dior, is destined to reach the realm of myth. This man, however, who so completely changed and glamorized haute couture from 1947 to 1957, contradicts the extroverted, flamboyant image the public has of fashion designers. Christian Dior, never comfortable with his celebrity, was a reserved, conservative man who hadn’t even considered working in the fashion industry. The events that led up to his role as “director of dreams for high society” astonished him more than anyone. He was a down-to-earth, humble man who treated the 900 employees of his large company as family. They were the ones he worked with to make the creations he so enjoyed drawing a reality. What are the roots of Dior’s impeccable taste? What inspired his dynamic creativity and amazing success? His childhood in Normandy, the everlasting image of his mother’s elegance, as well as his love of flowers, art, and architecture, help unravel the mystery of the man behind the myth.

Meghan Markle stuns in £4,600 Oscar de la Renta ball gown ($5,900)
MEGHAN Markle has stepped out in yet another gorgeous ball gown as she attended the prestigious Australian Geographic Society Awards with Prince Harry. Opting for a beautiful monochrome creation by Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta, Meghan's show-stopping dress featured intricate laser-cut black birds which highlighted the evening's environmental cause. The Duchess of Sussex, who is expecting her first child in Spring 2019, paired the beautiful monochrome dress with simple black kitten heels and minimal jewellery. In true Meghan Markle style, the elegant black and white tulle ball gown nipped in at the waist and gave a slight hint of the Duchess' growing baby bump. The flawless designer dress from Oscar de la Renta's AW18 collection costs £4,600 and features a showstopping tulle skirt. Allowing her princess-worthy dress to do all the talking, Meghan wore her hair in her signature loose waves and opted for a bronzed beauty look. Showing her support for environmental causes, Meghan presented the Young Conservationist of the Year at the Shangru-La Hotel in Sydney. The couple also accepted an award on behalf of Prince Charles for his environmental work. Prince Harry gave credit to his father for his "unrelenting commitment to preserve the most valuable resource we have - the planet." Turning to one of her failsafe designers for the special occasion, the Duchess is often spotted in Oscar de la Renta creations. Only last month, the Duchess opted for an oversized navy blouse by the designer to disguise her pregnancy.
