Richard Small - Gardens of the Year 2018

01:14
The tiniest garden in our final, Richard Small’s Tyne and Wear courtyard is just 3.2m x 6.6m. Our judges were impressed with the focus on only green and white plants, along with fitting so much into a small space.

Wildlife-friendly Garden: Christine Hill, 'Sublime squares'

01:02
Organic gardener Christine took on an abandoned, walled kitchen garden 13 years ago. She stuck with the geometric layout, creating different uses for each square: a pond, a veg plot, and a forest garden planted with native berry and nut trees, which feed the birds. Plenty of wildlife visits the garden: tits and sparrows, plus 70 starlings winter-roosted in the bamboo. Also hoverflies, dragonflies, damselflies, newts and beetles, plus a toad in the greenhouse!

Jeremy Young, 'All visitors welcome' - Wildlife Gardens

02:20
Jeremy and Cath have spent more than 20 years nurturing their impressive hidden garden. The plot began life as somewhere for their son Sam to play, but when friends and family began giving them cuttings, their passion for gardening grew. Avoiding chemical pest controls, abundant planting and a case-by-case review of all flora has helped create a beautifully diverse space that attracts wildlife. Plants are selected that offer cover and food, perennials are left uncut until late winter, and a 2.5m 'creature tower' made from dry-stacked rubble offers habitats for a variety of creatures. "It's quite a task to maintain our garden, but we love showing what is possible with a bit of imagination and hard work," says Jeremy.
