The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis are a strange natural phenomenon that can only be witnessed in the most northern regions of the globe. We had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go to Yellowknife Canada and watch the best aurora of the entire year so far. It was truly a magical moments that no words will ever be able to describe. This is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my life. If you wish to master aurora photography and learn from award winning photographers then check offer by Iceland Photo Tours at https://iceland-photo-tours.com/ On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north. Join Travel + Leisure on a trip 200km north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden to meet Chad Blakely, founder of Lights Over Lapland, a tour company that specializes in Northern Lights photography. 10 years ago, Chad quit his job in the US and moved to the small Swedish town of Abisko to photograph the Northern Lights. He now guides travelers out to the farthest reaches of Swedish Lapland. The snowy terrain is often accessible only by dogsled or snow mobile, and along the way travelers can enjoy a stay in the world’s first Ice Hotel and interact with the Sami people, the ethnic group of nomadic reindeer herders that call Lapland home. Chad will be our guide offering photography tips and arctic travel advice while exploring just what it is that draws people to the end of the earth to witness the Northern Lights. In April 2012, I was part of a team of scientists, teachers and students who travelled to Alaska to observe the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Our mission was a unique one - to launch weather balloons up to 100,000 feet loaded with experiments, tracking devices and HD cameras. This is the result of our trip, produced for Catalyst on ABC1 http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/

There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. To experience the unbelievable colours that moves across the Arctic sky is on many bucket lists, and few places offer more ways to witness the aurora borealis than Norway. But what's the story behind the Northern Lights? During large solar explosions and flares, huge quantities of particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. When the particles meet the Earth’s magnetic shield, they are led towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, where they interact with the upper layers of the atmosphere. The energy which is then released is the northern lights. All this happens approximately 100 kilometres above our heads. It was a magical experience seeing the northern lights from our igloo bungalow in Kakslauttanen Resort in Lapland, Finland. An island girl from the tropics, it was also my first time in the Arctic Circle so the whole experience was really magical for me. I know a lot of people are planning to catch the northern lights one day, so I have shared a few tips in this video so you can increase your chances of seeing them during your planned visit. If you visit the Arctic Circle, either from Finland, Iceland, Norway, Canada or Alaska, the goal of visiting these countries should not be the lights because of the probability of seeing them. The Aurora Borealis should only be the icing on the cake. I would say we were still "lucky" because we were able to see it 2/5 nights we stayed in Kakslauttanen. Lapland offers so many other adventures so even without the northern lights, it is such a magical place to be. You can go reindeer sledding, visit Santa's Village, go ice fishing and many more. The aurora borealis or northern lights is one of the most spectacular natural displays on the planet. Theories about its origins have been debated for centuries and common misconceptions persist that the aurora is the sun's rays scattered off ice crystals in the high atmosphere. In truth, the light is created more than 100km above Earth's surface as high speed electrons and protons ejected from the sun in a solar flare or coronal mass ejection collide with air molecules in the upper atmosphere. The charged particles from the sun excite air molecules which then de-excite by emitting light. The display is most common around the north and south poles because the Earth's magnetic field deflects the solar wind from the equator to the poles. Here the magnetic field dips towards the Earth's surface, channeling the charged particles into the atmosphere. Music is by Kevin MacLeod http://incompetech.com, the song is called Mirage

On a long November night, ultrarunner Kilian Jornet trains on a never-ending knife-edge ridge overlooking the dark fjords. Way up high, during the frigid windy night, Kilian attempts to make the aurora borealis appear. The Aurora Borealis (also known as the Northern Lights) and the Aurora Australis are a natural phenomenon created through the interaction between charged particles of the solar wind and the upper atmosphere. The auroras occur primarily in those regions close to the magnetic poles (source: https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Aurora). You can plan for this incredible phenomenon by following the aurora forecast on websites like Aurora-service (http://aurora-service.eu) Note: This film used special effects. Unfortunately, the NAO®+ cannot make the aurora borealis appear... ☺ Don't worry, your headlamp can work, even if your phone runs out of energy. It's my first watercolor tutorial on youtube. This is a very easy painting of the northern lights. Every beginner can paint it. First use paper tape to become pretty edges. Stick the paper with the tape at your desk or a board. Take the tape for help whenever you want. I used it to make a clean edge where the sky ends and the water begins. Than use the colors you want for the sky and sea, take enough water. Let the sky dry before painting the sea. If it's all dry, paint the mountains. Make the mountains in the background brighter than the boat, because of that the boat in the front looks closer and the mountains beyond. If you want to let it dry faster, use a hairdryer. Use white acrylic color to sprinkle the stars at the sky and the reflections in the water with a bristle brush. After that you can make single bigger stars with the end of a little brush. Before you paint the boat at the end, make a sketch with a pencil to be clean. You need: - watercolors - watercolor brushes - watercolor paper - white acrylic color - pencil - paper tape - bristle brush Thank you for watching. SUBSCRIBE for more videos.

Winter is the best time to go, as the nights are longest at this time. It’ll be freezing cold but you can’t see the lights unless it’s dark. Go for as long as possible. You’ll often have cloud cover in Iceland. We were there for two weeks and only managed to see the Lights twice. Your best chance is to go somewhere where there’s no light pollution so get out of the city and go somewhere dark. We used the Icelandic weather website, belgingur.is. We found it the most accurate for predicting cloud cover. White areas show where the skies are clear and this gives you your best chance to see the Northern Lights. The second website we used was the Icelandic Met Office. Now this gives you the aurora forecasts, the stronger the better, sunset times and moonrise times. This just means that you can plan for when it gets dark.

Officially known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are one of nature's most spectacular visual phenomena. Appearing in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, curtains or shooting rays, the northern lights' amazing light display can be observed in the sky of high latitude regions such as Norway or Canada. You might know the cause of this natural phenomenon (collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles) but there are many more interesting facts about this unreal spectacle that are worth learning. Here are 25 of them, illustrated with some of the most amazing Northern Lights pictures you have ever seen. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the physical list here for some extra info and explanations - http://list25.com/25-interesting-facts-about-northern-lights-you-should-know-before-you-see-them/ And now for a quick preview: The most spectacular Northern Lights in recent recorded history are considered those from the "Great geomagnetic storm" on 28 August and 2 September 1859. Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization. Astronauts on board the International Space Station are at the same altitude as the Northern Lights and see them from the side. The Southern Lights offer the same visual display as the Northern Lights but since the South Pole is even more inhospitable and inaccessible than the North Pole, it is more difficult to view the Southern Aurora. Therefore, the Northern Lights are more popular and get almost all the attention. There are several towns famous for their great conditions for watching the Northern Lights. In North America, the aurora tourism capital is Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Canada), while Tromso (Northern Norway) is the same for Europe. There have been many legends about the Northern Lights. Some North American Inuit tribes call the aurora „aqsarniit“ (meaning “football players”) thinking it is the spirits of the dead playing football with a head of a walrus. The colors of the Northern Lights depend on what gas is involved and how high in the ionosphere the reaction takes place. Blue and green lights form at lower altitudes while red color comes from the highest altitudes. Auroras tend to be more frequent and spectacular during high solar sunspot activity, which cycles over approximately eleven years. The last climax was in 2013. [...]
