A man working towards a PhD at Delaware University is in custody on suspicion of using spy cameras to peep on women going to the bathroom.
The 38-year-old doctoral student from Mexico was busted on Monday for installing hidden cameras in women’s bathrooms across the University of Delaware.
Student Javier Mendiola-Soto’s scheme was discovered after a woman found a tiny camera hidden in a tampon dispenser in an on-campus women’s bathroom
Police later found some 1,500 video files on Mendiola-Soto’s home computer that were recorded over a two-year period.
Police have so far identified 40 possible victims, and authorities have begun contacting victims and the university says it will offer counseling to any who requests it.
Mendiola-Soto is now in custody, his student visa has been revoked and he faces 21 counts of violation of privacy.
As cameras get smaller, hiding them has become significantly easier, posing challenges for companies, schools, restaurants and other establishments with public restrooms.
Tiny cameras been found hidden in the handles of toilet bowl cleaners, and even inside clothing hooks.
