In this tutorial you will learn how to scan barcodes via iPhone running on iOS 7.
How many times did you walk into a shop and got enchanted by a particular product that turned out to be overpriced? Many food items, books, tools and other goodies can be bought cheaper online and so being oriented in the sea of products and barcodes is a good habit.
Barcode scanning apps for iPhone have been around for quite a while. The only difference between older models of iPhone and newer models is that the new ones scan better:)
There are a lot of barcode scanning apps, both free and non-free, starting with simple barcode scanning apps and ending with crosses between barcode scanners and calorie counter or barcode scanner and shopping list.
Here are some of them: Scan - QR Code and Barcode Reader, Quick Scan - Barcode Scanner, Barcode Reader for iPhone, Quick Scan Pro, QuickMark Scan QR, and so on, and so forth...

Step 1. To illustrate the idea of barcode scanning in this video, we've chosen Quick Scan - Barcode Scanner app, free and easy to use. So we start downloading it from the App Store and launch it.
Step 2. Since we've downloaded our app while having a coffee in one of the book and coffee stores, we can now test it in action. Perfect! As many free apps, it has a paid PRO version. Well, we might consider it later.
So, Quick Scan interface presents us with two main options: "Search for Products" and "Scan Barcode". If we start with searching products by name, there will be no much results since we did not save our list of products yet and the app has no history with us. Instead, we'll proceed with barcode scanning.
Step 3. Simply put an object with a barcode in front of your phone's camera, close enough for the camera to keep the barcode number in focus. The green line of scanner reads through barcode, and, after some time, we're shown the result from web search.
Step 4. This time we try with a book. Bingo! As we can see, ordering book from "Amazon" is the cheapest option:) Now we can buy the book at the coffee shop, or, better, order it online. When we scan the barcode from tea box, it gives us two online price suggestions. Well, good enough.
Let's scan the barcode for one more book that we liked!
Step 5. If you tap "Settings" from the bottom of the screen, you can disable and enable vibration and sound that accompany each successful barcode scanning.
Step 6. Our favorite option is "Wish List" that can be accessed from the bottom of the screen. Being a smart buyer that you are, you can use it for your benefit and store the items that you want to buy here until you order them for the best price. Tap "Add New Wish List" and give your wish list a name. Tap "Done". Tap your newly created list's name and tap "Add New Items". Now you're redirected to the screen of "History "menu that stores the info of all scanned barcodes and related items. Tap the item of your interest and add it to your wish list. Tap "Save".
Step 7. Exactly in the same way we create a new wish list with books of our choice. If we tap "Edit", we can alter our wish lists by either deleting them or renaming them.
Step 8. Let's add one more book to our wish list. We scan the barcode of the new book and press the "heart" icon in the upper right corner to add it to "Favorites". It invokes two options - adding the book either to a new or already existing wish list. We tap "Add to Existing Wish List". Now the wish list has 2 books. When we tap it, we access more detailed info on the book list.
Result: This is pretty much everything that we can get from our barcode scanning app. We encourage you to explore more apps and more options now when you know the basics of barcode scanning!
