Ramadan prayers in Jerusalem

02:17
(6 Jun 2016) As the sun came down in Jerusalem on Monday, prayers rang out from the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the city's Temple Mount to indicate the end of the first day of fasting in the month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and smoking during the daylight hours, breaking the fast with a festive meal after sundown. Muslims see the fast of Ramadan as a means to intensify worship and contemplation, while also strengthening ties within the family and community. Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic Lunar calendar, and starts when the new moon is sighted. Later, thousands of Muslim worshippers gathered at Al-Aqsa compound for Tarawih, a special evening prayer service held during Ramadan. The founder works tirelessly to help people like herself who sometimes can feel alone and isolated. STORYLINE : In the Java town of Yogyakarta, local people who identify as transvestites have been receiving personal and religious support from a group set up by a local woman. Maryani, who was head of the Yogyakarta Transvestite Club, came up with the idea for the school after she attended an Islamic study session ten years ago. She says she was the only transvestite at the event and felt excluded by the others. Maryani was encouraged to open her own Islamic school and invite other transvestites in town to join her for prayer and support sessions. She opened the school at her home in 2008. Some twenty people, who identify as transvestites, and who live and work in the city, regularly come to Maryani's. Maryani sets aside her living room for the school sessions. The school is open from Monday to Thursday and usually starts just before sunset and finishes the following morning, as she explains. "At five o'clock people start coming to recite Islamic prayers. After that we perform our sunset prayer together. Then we recite a special part of the Quran one hundred times. Afterwards we do our evening prayer together. Then we will learn about daily prayers and reading the Quran." The people who attend the school rest after their midnight prayers then wake up at five in the morning for the Dawn Prayer. Despite its good intentions, the school has not always been welcomed by some members of the community. But Maulidi Khasani, the Muslim cleric who preaches and leads the discussions at the school, says he supports the people who attend the sessions as they are obviously devout and keen to be close to God. "As long as my friends here always spread the word of God, the message of peace and being good to others, I think God will give them His You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/53eedc282f9ca6c26eb75d7bcfdd529f Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

Muslims offer evening prayer at Jama Masjid

01:03
The Masjid-i Jahān-Numā, commonly known as the Jama Masjid of Delhi, is the principal mosque of Old Delhi in India. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, it is the largest and best-known mosque in India. Construction began in 1650 and was completed in 1656. It lies at the beginning of the Chawri Bazar Road, a very busy central street of Old Delhi. The later name, Jama Masjid, refers to the weekly Friday noon congregation prayers of Muslims, Jummah, which are usually done in a mosque, the "congregational mosque" or "jāma masjid". The courtyard of the mosque can hold up to twenty-five thousand worshippers. The mosque also houses several relics in a closet in the north gate, including an antique copy of the Qur'an written on deer skin. Islamic Call to Prayer (english translation-subtitles)

03:23
In Muslim countries, the adhan (call to prayer) rings out over the land for each of the five daily prayers. Muslims use the human voice to announce the times of prayer to the community. The Adhan is the call to prayer itself. This call is also pronounced as Athan or Azan. Muslims observe five formal prayers each day. The timings of these prayers are spaced fairly evenly throughout the day, so that one is constantly reminded of God and given opportunities to seek His guidance and forgiveness. Muslims observe the formal prayers at the following times: Fajr (pre-dawn): This prayer starts off the day with the remembrance of God; it is performed before sunrise. Dhuhr (noon): After the day's work has begun, one breaks shortly after noon to again remember God and seek His guidance. 'Asr (afternoon): In the late afternoon, people are usually busy wrapping up the day's work, getting kids home from school, etc. It is an important time to take a few minutes to remember God and the greater meaning of our lives. Maghrib (sunset): Just after the sun goes down, Muslims remember God again as the day begins to come to a close. 'Isha (evening): Before retiring for the night, Muslims again take time to remember God's presence, guidance, mercy, and forgiveness. In Muslim communities, people are reminded of the daily prayer times through the calling of the adhan. For those in Muslim-minority communities, computerized adhan programs are available. Adhan, God's call to prayer, is a tremendously valuable opportunity for us to disconnect from our earthly temptations, temporary rushes and helps us connect with God and assists us to remember and seek a purposeful life in God's righteous way. Following link gives detailed information as of how a salat (muslim prayer) is performed: http://www.sunna.info/prayer/TheBasicsoftheMuslimsPrayer.php Furthermore, following is a link of Quran in multiple languages (including English translation) with keyword search capability: http://quran.nu/

Muslims step towards Jama Masjid for evening prayer : Delhi

Muslim crowd step towards Jama masjid for evening prayer in Delhi, India. The mosque Jama Masjid (meaning Friday Mosque) is the most splendid mosque of Ahmedabad, built in 1424 during the reign of Ahmed Shah. Lying in the old party of city, the mosque is situated opposite to Mahatma Gandhi Road, on the eastern side of Teen Darwaza. The Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad was probably the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent built in this period. Designed as part of a major plan desired by the Emperor Sultan Ahmed Shah, the mosque is located south of the processional axis that runs from the Maidan-i Shah at the door with three arches, Teen Darwaza. To the west of the mosque are the tombs of Ahmed Shah, his son and his grandson (Ahmad Shah Rauza). Nearby are the graves of the queen and the other wives of the Sultan (Rani ka Hazira). Eid Ul Fitr call to prayer echo in the evening!

00:35
Eid-ul-Fitr, "Eid-ul-fitr", Eid al-Fitr, Id-ul-Fitr, or Id al-Fitr, often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm). Eid is an Arabic word meaning "festivity", while Fiṭr means "breaking the fast". The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The first day of Eid, therefore, falls on the first day of the month Shawwal. This is a day where Muslims around the world try to show a common goal of unity. It is a day of recognizance of God. Source - Wikipedia Islam is the second most practiced religion in India and Eid-ul-fitr is the biggest festival of the followers of Islam around the world. Also known as the festival of fast breaking Eid ul fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Muslim devotees practice a month of fasting, going without food or water through the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is believed to be the toughest of all the fasts and its end is celebrated on Eid. It is also a month of prayer and sharing. It is considered noble to help people or do charity during the month. The morning to evening fast starts with sehri, which refers to the early morning meal consumed by muslims before the fast begins for the day. Paired with sehri is iftar or the evening meal with which the daylong fast is broken. Traditionally dates are eaten to break the fast, emulating prophet Muhammed who broke his fast in this fashion. Each day of the fast is called the roza, which literally translates into fasting daily. The tough month of Ramadan ends with the celebration of Eid. The day is celebrated with massed Namaz or prayer in the morning. Devout muslims do Namaz five times every day at fixed times and this namaz can be performed alone. Eid namaz is of a higher importance and is performed at the Eidgah or mosque with a congregation. Women are barred from entering but men gather at the nearest mosque for this collective prayer. Women perform the Eid namaz at home and prepare delicacies for their families. A special delicacy sevai made on this day gave it another name - meethi eid, which means sweet in Hindi. Eid greetings are passed on to each other with a hug and gifts called Eidi. This is a good day for beggars as they get a lot of alms from the people in their festive mood. Beggars gather where Namaz takes place and wait for their share of eid blessings. The followers of Islam celebrate Eid all over the world as a symbol of strength and self-control and unite in the name of Allah. The harsh month of Ramadan ends in the celebration of eid to mark the blessings of Allah on to the one with absolute self-restrain. How To Attend a Muslim Friday Prayer Service (Jum’ah)

03:25
Watch more How to Celebrate Ramadan videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/217206-How-To-Attend-a-Muslim-Friday-Prayer-Service-Jumah Step 1: Find a Friday prayer service Use Muslim acquaintances or a Website to find a Friday prayer service near you. Most are held around lunchtime. Tip Friday prayer services do not always happen in a mosque. University students often arrange Friday prayers in an empty hall or auditorium. Mosques in urban areas host prayers in satellite locations, such as downtown office buildings or even churches. Step 2: Purify your intention As with all acts in Islam, take a quiet moment to purify your intention, affirming that you plan to attend Friday prayers for God’s sake alone. Tip While Friday is usually a holiday in Muslim-majority countries, it’s a regular workday elsewhere, and some men are not able to attend as a result. Do your best to fit Friday prayers into your work schedule. Step 3: Take a shower or bath If you are able and you have time, take a shower or bath on Friday morning, as this practice was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad, who advised his followers to keep clean. Step 4: Dress in clean, modest clothes Dress in clean, modest clothes. For men, this means no shorts. For women, this means covering the arms and legs, avoiding tight or revealing clothing, and bringing along a headscarf. Tip Cologne is recommended for men, but perfume for women should be avoided. Step 5: Remove your shoes When entering the mosque or prayer area, remove your shoes. This is the moment of truth for your socks! Step 6: Enter prayer area with right foot first Enter the prayer area with your right foot first. If the mosque is segregated according to gender, women should enter the women’s area, and men should enter the men’s area. Tip If you have small children, you may prefer to leave them at home. If you need to, however, you can bring them. Children of all ages are a common sight at Friday prayers. If a child is very disruptive, or if a baby can’t stop crying, however, you may have to leave with them. Step 7: Offer voluntary prayer If you are Muslim, offer two cycles of voluntary prayer, known as tahyatul masjid salah, which means literally, 'the prayer to greet the mosque.' Tip If you are not Muslim, take a moment to sit quietly and offer your own prayers. Step 8: Sit next to other congregants on the floor Sit next to other congregants on the floor. Choose the available space closest to the front of the room. In other words, the front rows should be filled first, particularly because the back rows should be left open for latecomers. Step 9: Listen to adhan Listen as a fellow congregant gives the adhan, or call to prayer. This means the Friday prayer service has begun; refrain from talking at this point. Step 10: Sit quietly & listen to imam Sit quietly and listen while the imam, or prayer leader, offers a sermon, or khutbah. The first half the khutbah is the longest, followed by a brief period when the imam will sit down and offer silent prayers. Then he will stand again to deliver the shorter final section of the sermon. Tip A sermon will always open and close with words in Arabic. Hopefully, the language of the sermon itself will be one you understand. If not, be patient and ask someone near you for a translation when it is over. Step 11: Listen to iqaamah After the sermon, a man will stand to give the iqaamah, a shortened version of the call to prayer, which indicates the prayer itself is about to commence. Step 12: Line up shoulder to shoulder Stand up and move so you are standing shoulder to shoulder with the people on your left and right, forming a straight line that faces the qibla, or direction pointing to Mecca. Your shoulders, arms or feet can be lightly touching other people’s. Tip If you are not Muslim, ask someone where you can sit to observe the prayers. Generally, non-Muslims should not join in the prayer. Step 13: Perform salat Perform two cycles of the ritual prayer, or salat, following along with the imam. Step 14: Greet other people When the prayer is over, be sure to greet the people praying on either side of you when they are finished, either by shaking their hands and saying, 'May Allah accept your prayers,' or by simply smiling. Step 15: Make a charitable contribution If you wish, make a charitable contribution as you leave. Boxes for contributions are generally available near the exit. Did You Know? The Prophet Muhammad was known for giving short sermons, but don’t expect everyone to follow that lead—some sermons can last more than an hour.

If you take my soul whilst I am sleeping (grant me death) then have mercy on my soul and if you leave me (let me live) by your power protect me by that with which you have protected your righteous servants".

Various of Muslim worshippers praying STORYLINE Thousands of Palestinian Muslims prayed in the streets near Jerusalem's most contested holy site Tuesday, heeding a call by clergy to not enter the shrine despite Israel's seeming capitulation when it removed metal detectors it installed there a week earlier. Muslim leaders said they would only call off the protests once they made sure Israel had restored the situation to what it was before the latest crisis. Some Muslim officials alleged that Israel used the absence of Muslim clerics from the walled compound in the past week of protests to install new security cameras. The continued standoff highlighted the deep distrust between Israel and the Palestinians when it comes to the shrine - the third-holiest in Islam and the most sacred in Judaism. The 37-acre esplanade, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount, has been a lightning rod for rival religious and national narratives of the two sides. It has triggered major confrontations in the past. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
