Lightroom has an inbuilt backup feature. It's strictly the catalog that's backed up, not your photos. While the timing of backups can be set easily, the rest of the settings are only available during backup. I look at all of these in the video as well as how to extract the backup and replace the main catalog file with it. My Book! In this video I demonstrate how I go about backing up my images. Any backup strategy involving Lightroom should adhere to the following rules: 1.) Backup all images in Lightroom as well as the Lightroom Catalog 2.) Make one backup locally to a different hard drive 3.) A second backup should be offsite (the cloud) 4.) Backups should be done automatically, autonomously in the background In the video I talk about the cloud site I use: http://www.crashplan.com

This video explains the process I use to automatically backup my Lightroom Catalogs everytime I logoff/shut down my PC. Please note, this does have a requirement that you are running a "Pro" version of Windows as Group Policy Editor is not available in "Home versions". This enables me to turn off the warning when exiting Lightroom and not have to worry about using the built in backup. This process will work for any type of storage you may have, NAS, WIndows Share, USB HDD, Memory Card, 2nd HDD etc...... Written instructions can also be found on my Blog at http://www.craigrogers.photography/?p=1032 This is my first attempt at one of these "How To" Videos, so please forgive the slight hunting of the Auto Focus on my headshot, future videos will be shot in Manual Focus. Any questions, please feel free to comment or get in touch. Please note! Lightroom Catalogues are priceless, please be careful when following these instructions. If in doubt make a full copy of them somewhere else before you start. All of the above is something I decided to do to make my life easier and is not an Adobe process. I cannot be held responsible for any loss of data that you may have from any of this information.

Article Link: http://www.slrlounge.com/school/understanding-the-lightroom-catalog-system The Lightroom catalog is simply a container, or even better, a database of information that applies to the images contained within. What you are actually seeing in the Lightroom catalog are not the images themselves, but rather preview renderings of those images with whatever develop settings you have applied. Deleting a Lightroom catalog does not mean that you are deleting the images, but rather just the catalog information on ratings, keywords, develop settings, etc. Also, moving a Lightroom catalog file doesn't move the images along with it. For this reason, it is important to have a good organizational system for your Lightroom catalogs and the images therein. From here on out in this tutorial series, we want you all to work along with us. So, you can either load up your own working files, or you can download the exact working files that we will be using. In the next video, we will start by creating our catalog, then importing and working on our images. (FREE TUTORIAL) How To Backup Adobe Photoshop Lightroom with Apple's Time Machine Utility Learn how to protect your Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog and all of your photographs in this free video tutorial for Mac OS users. I demonstrate an easy way to protect all of my images, and my Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Catalog, using the Apple's Time Machine utility in this free tutorial and a pair of inexpensive USB external hard drives. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a wonderful image management tool but it is not a backup system. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom’s internal Catalog Backup utility is a placebo and it will do nothing to protect your photography if your computer crashes or hard drive fails. An Adobe Creative Cloud monthly membership subscription is not a backup plan either. Adobe does not offer data protection and backup services. The problem is that no hard drive will last forever. The real question is not “when will my hard drive fail” but rather “what steps can I take right now so that I am properly prepared for this computer’s inevitable demise?” For advice on building a more advanced, and more flexible backup system, using the awesome Carbon Copy Cloner backup utility for Mac from Bombich Software please visit our site. Windows users may find the theory here helpful but unfortunately Time Machine is an Apple product and it is not currently available for Microsoft customers. ------------ Learn Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe Lightroom for Mobile, Snapseed from Google, and more with our complete video training courses at http://www.focusphotoschool.com. 02:00 - Exporting our Images/Folders for Backing up 05:39 - The 3-2-1 method of Backup up 07:53 - (MAC ONLY) Using Time Machine to Back Up and retrieve lost photos. 13:23 - Backing Up into the Cloud – – – Backing up your photos is critically important and it needs to be a part of your photographic routine. In this video, I explain the back of concept of 3-2-1: Three hard backups of all your photos, two of those sources in two different places and 1 backup safe in the cloud. With that in mind, I show you how to export folders (either individual folders or your ENTIRE library) as a catalog of all your image edits and hard copies of your photo files: this can now be easily backed up onto a disc or an external hard drive. We also explore APPLE'S Time Machine feature and I show how you can retrieve lost files with it. Finally, I point you towards www.backblaze.com, a backup service that I recommend for its ease of use, efficiency and ability to synchronize with your backup and protect EVERY file as it enters your computer! This is the fifth episode of a new series where I give a single, quick Lightroom tip. Often, when we begin to use Lightroom we have our Lightroom Library on the local drive of our computer. Before long, it may swell with thousands of images and take up too much space. In this video I show how you can easily move your entire Lightroom Library to an external hard drive and preserve all the edits that you've previously done.
