In this video I show you how to make a t-shirt from the design to manufacturing process. It starts with designing a shirt, pattern making, sewing, cutting and then goes into large production manufacturing. Step 1: T-Shirt Design The first step to making a t-shirt involves the design sketch. Create a sketch that depicts the angles and details you'd like the final shirt to have. It doesn't have to be super fancy, as long as you can show what you need. Designing a shirt with the end goal in mind helps the pattern maker know what you are going for. Thanks you Torey Lewitz for joining us. Step 2: Pattern Making Once the designs are completed, you will consult with a pattern maker to bring your clothing line to life. The pattern maker will take your designs and create “patterns” which are the pieces that will be cut and sewn together. Step 3: Sample Cutting Once the patterns are completed, they are printing on a plotter that creates the outline for the sample cutter. The person in charge of cutting the sample will follow the guides to ensure the pieces are cut to the right specifications. Castle Notches allow the person in charge of sewing to close the product up right. Step 4: Sewing The T-Shirt After the fabric is cut out, it is ready to be sewn. The cut pieces are now the shape of the patterns and multiple sewing machines are used to finish the design. The final outcome is hopefully what you envisioned. But more than likely it won’t be the final fit, so you will repeat the process until you are happy with the size, fit and shape of your apparel line. Step 5: Mass Production Cutting As soon as the shirt or apparel design you created is approved, the patterns are finalized and sent into the production process. John Chacon Head Of Production walks us through his process. Step 6: Mass Production Sewing Once the pieces are all cut out, they are sent to the sewing factory. The factory is given the cut fabric and the head of production is in charge of making sure everyone knows what their role is. Step 7: Order Fulfillment/ Clothing Line Distribution The last step in this video is the order fulfillment and distribution of the finished clothing. As a clothing business you also have to think about how you will provide quicker shipping, handle returns and manage employees. The basic idea exists in almost all engineering disciplines, but of course the details differ widely depending on the manufacturing technology. This design practice not only focuses on the design aspect of a part but also on the producibility. In simple language it means relative ease to manufacture a product, part or assembly. DFM describes the process of designing or engineering a product in order to facilitate the manufacturing process in order to reduce its manufacturing costs. DFM will allow potential problems to be fixed in the design phase which is the least expensive place to address them. The design of the component can have an enormous effect on the cost of manufacturing. Other factors may affect the manufacturability such as the type of raw material, the form of the raw material, dimensional tolerances, and secondary processing such as finishing. The design stage is very important in product design. Most of the product life cycle costs are committed at design stage Citation needed. The product design is not just based on good design but it should be possible to produce by manufacturing as well. Often an otherwise good design is difficult or impossible to produce. Typically a design engineer will create a model or design and send it to manufacturing for review and invite feedback. This process is called a design review. If this process is not followed diligently, the product may fail at the manufacturing stage. If these DFM guidelines are not followed, it will result in iterative design, loss of manufacturing time and overall resulting in longer time to market. Hence many organizations have adopted concept of Design for Manufacturing. Depending on various types of manufacturing processes there are set guidelines for DFM practices. These DFM guidelines help to precisely define various tolerances, rules and common manufacturing checks related to DFM. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. And companies often wonder “well why not, we have one that works, why can’t we just make a hundred thousand of them?” And really the key is in understanding design and the design process, is that there’s things that you have to bake from the very start, you have to bake those in and you have to understand how to design a product, how to design a part for the right manufacturing processes that will be used at the end, and you have to do that right at the beginning. So not only do you have to think about, is the part going to be machined or molded, you have to think about how it is going to be assembled, how is it going to be tested? Those disciplines together designed for manufacturing, designed for assembly, designed for test, are now known as ‘DFX’. And looking at DFX is a big component of having a successful product that’s going to be able to scale for high-volume manufacturing. One of the other things that’s also important is the components that are actually in that design and in that prototype. [Utilizing human sensibility, knowledge, and know-how in Digital design, Digital manufacturing] The Aoyama Group research focuses on developing computer systems for design and manufacturing, by combining science and engineering with knowledge and know-how regarding digital design, digital manufacturing, CAD, and CAM. Lets take a look at the manufacturing processes in a company. Design work is conducted by sketching, and design is confirmed by making clay models, then CAD is used to create a 3D model. Design is evaluated by rapid prototyping machines. Dies and molds are manufactured using machine tools and products are formed by dies and molds, and finally, its inspected by measuring machine. The manufacturing process consists of product planning, concept design, basic and structural design, detailed design, manufacturing planning and design, manufacturing and assembly, and inspection and evaluation, leading finally to products. The Aoyama Group is studying all these processes. In digital design, the Group is researching for analyzing the esthetics of products from a scientific and engineering viewpoint and applying the analysis results to product design. And the Group is studying how to combine technology and skill of designers and engineers in digital technology. In digital manufacturing, the Group is developing support systems based on scientific and engineering principles, and ways to utilize human sensibility, knowledge, and know-how digitally. Q.My group studies design and processing from a range of perspectives. Our main activity is developing computer systems for design and manufacturing that combine knowledge and know-how with science and engineering. So let me tell you about a few of our research projects. [System for automatically generating designs from conceptual words] Generating a form from words means that a form for a design can be thought up from a plan or concept. A diverse range of designs can be automatically generated by assigning numerical values to the conceptual words such as softness, stability, strength, and so on. Presenting diverse designs using this system can stimulate designers imagination. [System for generating 3D forms from sketches] Designers make concrete ideas from abstract ideas while drawing lots of sketches. If 3D forms can be created in real time when a designer draws sketches, this can help with both embodying a design and coming up with ideas. [System for fairing forms using highlight lines] After a form has become concrete to some extent, the form fairing is often required. To do this using scientific and engineering techniques, the team is developing ways of fairing forms while maintaining the designers sensibility by analyzing changes in curvature using highlight lines, which indicate light reflections from curved surfaces. [System for designing wood grain patterns] As an example of how design efficiency can be improved by using digital technology, computer programs simulate virtual tree growth and diverse wood grain patterns are generated as cross section patterns of a virtual tree trunk. [System for digitizing and utilizing knowledge, know-how, and experience ] When products are mechanically processed, cutting tools are used. Expert workers use their experience to decide how to move the tools to process products efficiently. The Aoyama Group is developing a system to utilize experts know-how. Q.So far, I've presented a lot of system for style designs, but were also researching design systems, production systems and manufacturing systems in similar ways.
