Table Shrinking in Oracle Database

14:15
1.Shrink the Table: Shrinking is started from 10g. In this method I’m using user u1 and table name sm1. Now I’m deleting some rows in sm1 COUNT ---------- 1048576 Table sm1 has 1048576 rows. [email protected]: delete from sm1 where deptno=10; 262144 rows deleted. I deleted above number of rows. Rows COUNT ---------- 786432 And I’m giving commit [email protected]: commit; Commit complete. So now we have 786432 rows in sm1 table. Now see the following command [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 After I deleted some rows in sm1 table still above result showing same values, so now our duty is shrink this table. This is done by following 2 ways, i By using COMPACT key word: In this method shrinking is done in two phases. In the first phase all fragmented space are just defragmented, but still the High Water Mark is persist with last used block only. That mean used free blocks are not de allocated and HWM is not updated here. Issue the following command before use shrink command. [email protected] alter table sm1 enable row movement; Table altered. There is particular use with above command, when we shrink the table all rows are moves to contiguous blocks, so here row movement should be done. By default the row movement is disabled for any table, so above command enabled the row movement. Then execute shrink command now. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact; Table altered. Now see the space of table by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ------ ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 29 mb 3712 44 So here seems nothing happened with above shrink command, but internally the fragmented space is defragmented. But the high water mark is not updated, used free blocks are also not de allocated. For de allocating the used blocks we have to execute below command. This is the second phase. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space; Table altered. Now see the space by using below command. [email protected]: select OWNER,TABLESPACE_NAME,SEGMENT_NAME,SEGMENT_TYPE,BYTES/1024/1024||' mb'"space",BLOCKS,EXTENTS from dba_segments where tablespace_name like 'U%TS'; OWNER TABLESPACE_NAME SEGMENT_NAME SEGMENT_TYPE space BLOCKS EXTENTS ----- --------------- ------------- ------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- U1 U1TS SM1 TABLE 20.8125 mb 2664 36 So now the space of sm1 table is reduced. Note: Actually the alter table sm1 shrink space command will complete these two phases of the shrinking of table at a time. But here we done shrink process in two phases because when we use alter table sm1 shrink space command the table locked temporarily some time period, during this period users unable to access the table. So if we use alter table sm1 shrink space compact command the table is not locked but space is defragmented. When we not in business hours issue the second phase shrink command then users are won’t get any problem. ii Because of above method the table dependent objects are goes to invalid state, to overcome this problem we have to use below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. The above command also shrinks the space of all dependent objects. We also do this in two phases like above two phases. See the below command. [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space compact cascade; Table altered. And then [email protected]: alter table sm1 shrink space cascade; Table altered. Charlie Hunt Presents Java’s Compact Strings

50:53
Abstract: A feature included in JDK 9 called Compact Strings, (JEP 254 - http://openjdk.java.net/jeps/254), transparently introduces single character storage for Java’s java.lang.String, and related StringBuilder, StringBuffer classes. The goal of this project was to reduce Java application memory footprint, yet not sacrifice throughput. This session talks about not only the feature, but the methodology behind meeting the project goals of reducing memory footprint, yet not sacrificing throughput performance with the use of java.lang.String, StringBuilder, StringBuffer and related classes. In fact, this session will also illustrate that some Java application will realize a reduction in memory footprint, improved throughput and lower latency. Attendees will learn more about the feature, and the testing approach utilized to ensure project goals had been met with what is arguably the most popular Java object in the JDK. Bio: Charlie Hunt is a Java and JVM Performance Engineer at Oracle. His responsibilities span the three legged stool of performance; throughput, latency and memory footprint. He leads a variety of Java and JVM projects whose focus is on one, two or all three of these performance areas. He is the lead author of Java™ Performance (Addison-Wesley, 2012), and a co-author of Java™ Performance Companion (Addison-Wesley, 2016). He is a regular presenter at the JavaOne Conference where he has been recognized as a Java Rock Star. Charlie wrote his first Java application in 1998, joined Sun Microsystems in 1999 as Senior Java Architect, and has had a passion for Java and JVM performance ever since.

Important Note: if you have centos 7 use "xfs_growfs" instead of "resize2fs" In this tutorial you are going to learn how to reduce the size of a logical volume and to extend the size of another one. Scenario: After installing CentOS 6 we got the root directory volume with 50GB size and all the rest space is dedicated to the home directory (240GB), so we are going to show how to increase the root logical volume, and how to reduce the home logical volume. The steps are: 1. unmount the home directory 2. Check the filesystem 3. resize the actual size of the home directory to be only 40GB. 4. reduce the logical volume 5. extend the root logical volume 6. resize the root partition 4. remount the home directory and check new sizes Logical Volume Management LVM management logical volume manager linux logical volume manager logical volume group logical volume linux extend logical volume logical drive logical partition lvm linux resize logical volume

SQLPLUS: LineSize & PageSize

03:49
In this tutorial, you'll learn how to set linesize and pagesize . PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

How to Increase Disk Size in VirtualBox

01:41
In this video we discuss how to increase disk size in virtualbox using the vboxmanage modifyhd command Managing virtual disks (VDI) is part of how to use Virtualbox. As these containers take up space on the Host computers hard disk it is important to select a storage volume size that is appropriate for the virtual machine it will be use on. However, you may need to change the disk size after windows is installed and you start working with the virtual machine. Sample Commands: VBoxManage modifymedium "E:\VirtualBox VMs\VistaUpgrade\VistaUpgrade.vdi" --resize 81920 VBoxManage modifyhd $11895afe-9b98-4810-821b-998afedec8c2 --resize 81920 Oracle VM VirtualBox is a free and open-source hypervisor for x86 computers currently being developed by Oracle Corporation. Post-Quantum Zero-Knowledge and Signatures from Symmetric-Key

33:34
We propose a new class of post-quantum digital signature schemes that: (a) derive their security entirely from the security of symmetric-key primitives, believed to be quantum-secure, and (b) have extremely small keypairs, and, (c) are highly parametrizable. In our signature constructions, the public key is an image y=f(x) of a one-way function f and secret key x. A signature is a non-interactive zero-knowledge proof of x, that incorporates a message to be signed. For this proof, we leverage recent progress of Giacomelli et al. (USENIX'16) in constructing an efficient sigma protocol for statements over general circuits. We improve this sigma protocol to reduce proof sizes by a factor of two, at no additional computational cost. While this is of independent interest as it yields more compact proofs for any circuit, it also decreases our signature sizes. We consider two possibilities for making the proof non-interactive, the Fiat-Shamir transform, and Unruh's transform (EUROCRYPT'12,'15,'16). The former has smaller signatures, while the latter has a security analysis in the quantum-accessible random oracle model. By customizing Unruh's transform to our application, the overhead is reduced to 1.6x when compared to the Fiat-Shamir transform, which does not have a rigorous post-quantum security analysis. We implement and benchmark both approaches and explore the possible choice of f, taking advantage of the recent trend to strive for practical symmetric ciphers with a particularly low number of multiplications and end up using LowMC. This is joint work with Melissa Chase, David Derler, Steven Goldfeder, Claudio Orlandi, Christian Rechberger, Daniel Slamanig and Greg Zaverucha.  See more on this video at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/video/post-quantum-zero-knowledge-and-signatures-from-symmetric-key/

What is BLOCK RANGE INDEX? What does BLOCK RANGE INDEX mean? BLOCK RANGE INDEX meaning

08:12
What is BLOCK RANGE INDEX? What does BLOCK RANGE INDEX mean? BLOCK RANGE INDEX meaning - BLOCK RANGE INDEX definition - BLOCK RANGE INDEX explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ A Block Range Index or BRIN is a database indexing technique. They are intended to improve performance with extremely large tables. BRIN indexes provide similar benefits to horizontal partitioning or sharding but without needing to explicitly declare partitions. A BRIN is applicable to an index on a table that is large and where the index key value is easily sorted and evaluated with a MinMax function. BRIN were originally proposed by Alvaro Herrera of 2ndQuadrant in 2013 as 'Minmax indexes'. Implementations thus far are tightly coupled to internal implementation and storage techniques for the database tables. This makes them efficient, but limits them to particular vendors. So far PostgreSQL is the only vendor to have announced a live product with this specific feature, in PostgreSQL 9.5. Other vendors have described some similar features, including Oracle, Netezza 'zone maps', Infobright 'data packs', MonetDB and Apache Hive with ORC/Parquet. BRIN operate by "summarising" large blocks of data into a compact form, which can be efficiently tested to exclude many of them from a database query, early on. These tests exclude a large block of data for each comparison. By reducing the data volume so early on, both by representing large blocks as small tuples, and by eliminating many blocks, BRIN substantially reduce the amount of detailed data that must be examined by the database node on a row-by-row basis. Data storage in large databases is layered and chunked, with the table storage arranged into 'blocks'. Each block contains perhaps 1MB in each chunk and they are retrieved by requesting specific blocks from a disk-based storage layer. BRIN are a lightweight in-memory summary layer above this: each tuple in the index summarises one block as to the range of the data contained therein: its minimum and maximum values, and if the block contains any non-null data for the column(s) of interest. Unlike a traditional index which locates the regions of the table containing values of interest, BRIN act as "negative indexes", showing the blocks that are definitely not of interest and thus do not need to be processed further. Some simple benchmarks suggest a five-fold improvement in search performance with an index scan, compared to the unindexed table. Compared to B-trees, they avoid their maintenance overhead. As BRIN are so lightweight, they may be held entirely in memory, thus avoiding disk overhead during the scan. The same may not be true of B-tree: B-tree requires a tree node for every approximately N rows in the table, where N is the capacity of a single node, thus the index size is large. As BRIN only requires a tuple for each block (of many rows), the index becomes sufficiently small to make the difference between disk and memory. For a 'narrow' table the B-tree index volume approaches that of the table itself; the BRIN may be only 5-15% of it. A large database index would typically use B-tree algorithms. BRIN is not always a substitute for B-tree, it is an improvement on sequential scanning of an index, with particular (and potentially large) advantages when the index meets particular conditions for being ordered and for the search target to be a narrow set of these values. In the general case, with random data, B-tree may still be superior. A particular advantage of the BRIN technique, shared with Oracle Exadata's Smart Scanning, is in the use of this type of index with Big Data or data warehousing applications, where it is known that almost all of the table is irrelevant to the range of interest. BRIN allows the table to be queried in such cases by only retrieving blocks that may contain data of interest and excluding those which are clearly outside the range, or contain no data for this column. A regular problem with the processing of large tables is that retrieval requires the use of an index, but maintaining this index slows down the addition of new records. Typical practices have been to group additions together and add them as a single bulk transaction, or to drop the index, add the batch of new records and then recreate the index. Both of these are disruptive to simultaneous read / write operations and may not be possible in some continuously-operating businesses. With BRIN, the slowdown from maintaining the index is much reduced compared to B-tree. Wong reports that B-tree slowed down additions to an unindexed 10GB table by 85%, but a comparable BRIN only had an overhead of 11%. BRIN may be created for extremely large data where B-tree would require horizontal partitioning.....
