Bowdoin Male Athletes Push Back Against Gender Violence

Winn, who plays on the Bowdoin men's hockey team and is a member of BMASV, recently reached out to the group's leaders to ask them to comment on the implications of the work they're doing in light of the #MeToo movement.* Women’s groups at Bowdoin have long organized against sexual violence, going back at least 20 years. About a decade ago, a group of men decided to get on board, forming Bowdoin Men Against Sexual Violence, or BMASV (pronounced B-Massive). The club was founded by three student athletes, Kevin Mullins ’07, Zach Hammond ’07, and Dan Robinson ’07, who wanted to shift the culture and conversation around gender and violence. Today, the work of BMASV — as well as the other student groups that address this issue — seems all the more important in light of the recent upswell of women’s personal testimonials and media coverage around issues of sexual harassment and abuse. Up to now, BMASV’s leaders — all varsity male athletes — have mainly facilitated regular conversations among other athletes on men’s sports teams at Bowdoin. But recently, the group has been collaborating with the female-led group VSpace, which does similar work with women’s athletic teams. Together the groups are inviting other campus groups, such as club teams and college houses, to also engage in these dialogues. “The conversations involve talking about masculinity, what it means to be a man, consent..and language — how certain language we use can be harmful and perpetuate certain ideals that we want to eradicate not only in our Bowdoin community, but in [the larger] community,” BMASV co-leader Peter Benson ’18 said. “The work we are doing now is only setting up our future generation to being more aware,” BMASV co-leader Noah Nelson ’19 said. Other student groups at Bowdoin working on the topic include The Sex Project, which promotes safer sex and healthy sexuality, the advocacy group Safe Space, BHeRe (Bowdoin Healthy Relationships) and fEMPOWER, which is responsible for the annual production of RISE.

The aim of these exercises is to train muscularity strength and to evolve comprehensive fitness. * Urban Calisthenics - a form of body weight exercise performed with no or little apparatus. Individuals and/or groups train and exercise in urban areas and spaces. Advanced Urban Calisthenics skills include Muscle Up's, Typewriter pull ups and both Front and Back Levers. * Street Workouts are usually performed outdoor or in specifically designed street workout parks. PLEASE READ* Make sure you can properly perform the movements before actually trying to do them! Those of you who try these movements are responsible for knowing your own bodies capabilities and limitations in regards to fitness I suggest a light stretch or stationary jog prior to performing the push-ups. Also, if you so happen to have any previous injuries to your knees, or lower-back, etc.- I suggest you use these movements with caution and consult with your physician if you are unsure! Be sure to keep good form and breathing throughout this exercise! Also don't forget, to get the BEST results from these movements it is vital to sustain a healthy diet and workout routine with a steady meal plan! Enjoy guys! PUSH-UP TIP: Where you keep your feet is up to you- the wider they are spread the more balance you will have. Make sure your arms are shoulder width apart and your leaning your shoulders just slightly over your hands from your vision. From there, you want to thrust your hips but keep your pelvis and mid-section tight and braced. FORM TIP: Keep the inside of your elbows in when you are doing push-ups! You want to scrape the side of your ribs with the inside of your elbows! BREATHING TIP: Keep your back straight and your head up! Breathe out as you push-up and breathe in as you release back down. EXTRA TIP: Don't lock your elbows completely when repping push-ups during a workout. You don't want to put the stress on your joints. Because after spending years building muscle naturally I've learned that there are certain useless exercises that you should avoid entirely other exercises that you might want to consider incorporating and then there are the exercises that you just cant go without. Exercises that by themselves have the power to transform your physique. I've narrowed this list down to just seven of the most important exercises that you absolutely should have as a staple part of your routine to efficiently build the most muscle in the shortest amount of time. By mastering these 7 key compound exercises you'll see incredible results even if you're not doing any other exercises in the gym. And I made this video specifically for men not because women can't benefit from these exercises as well but because the ideal attractive body type for men is a V shape whereas for women it's more of an hourglass figure. So even though a lot of the exercises do crossover for both men women this video is specifically to help you develop the best manly physique with the least amount of exercises possible. I'm going to list off these exercises in no particular order, so Let's start first with a very important upper body exercise the bent over barbell Row. With this exercise you'll be working the rhomboids which are the muscles that connect your shoulder blades together so your upper back muscles and you'll also be working the back of your shoulder and your biceps. This is one of the most important pulling movements that you can do. Because you're working multiple muscle groups responsible for Pulling you're able to lift a lot more weight with this compound exercise then if you were to isolate any one of these muscles individually. By strengthening your rhomboids and your posterior deltoid you'll be tightening up your upper back which will help you hold yourself straight up and maintain a better more attractive upright posture. Since you can lift heavy weight with this exercise your biceps are also going to get a lot of stimulation because you'll be lifting a weight that would be impossible to lift with an isolated movement like bicep curls. A basic bent over row is done by grabbing a barbell with your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart. Stick your butt out and stick your chest out before beginning the movement. Then bend down by about 60 degrees so you're a little higher than being fully parallel to the ground and you want let the weight hang straight down, do not flex your shoulders. While keeping your chest out pull the barbell inward towards your stomach and aim to touch your belly button with the bar. Then bring it back down to that hanging position and repeat this motion for reps. The great thing about rows is that you can do it with a barbell or you can do it with dumbbells, but a general rule of thumb to remember is that you'll be able to lift more weight and typically you'll be able to build more mass with barbells over dumbbells. Also by changing the angles at which you bend during a bent over row you can Target different parts of your back. A fully bent-over position where you're at a 90 degree angle will Target more of your lats and the middle of your back whereas standing more upright will Target more of your traps and upper back. Let's move on to another staple exercise that you should be doing, barbell and dumbbell chest presses. While the rows will help you develop the posterior or the back part of your upper body the chest presses are there to help you develop the anterior or the front part of your upper body. It'll hit your chest, the front head of your shoulders as well as your triceps. With chest presses you want to spend the majority of your time doing them at two different angles flat and incline. If your weakness is your upper chest you want to spend more of your time doing incline presses. if your upper chest is fine but you lack lower chest development you want to spend more of your time doing flat movements. Mind the gap: Commuters push train to save trapped man in Perth

The man became stuck after he slipped and one leg became wedged in the gap, as he attempted to board a Stirling to Perth train on Wednesday morning. In dramatic CCTV footage, commuters can be seen rushing to the man's assistance and tipping the whole carriage in a bid to free the trapped commuter. Passengers were originally asked to move to one side of the carriage in order to transfer the weight of the train away from the man. Sadly that plan failed so passengers exited the train, lined up alongside the carriage and started pushing. An ambulance was called to the station but the man did not sustain any serious injuries. This was yet another great UK domestic flight from my favourite airline ready to connect to a european flight to Oslo. The flight was almost on time landing at Heathrow and if it wasn't for 10 minutes of holding we would have arrived on time. As i'd expect from such a good airline, all staff were courteous and polite, the onboard service was good and the seats comfy with enough legroom, even if it was such a short flight. The next flight video from my trip to Norway will be uploaded in the not too distant future so stay tuned for that, a flight report will also be uploaded to my website in coming weeks (links below) and images will be uploaded to my Flickr. Fortunately there was an aircraft change from an airbus A321 which meant my seat was moved forwards, on the 321 I was sat in the back row which would have been a very poor location for filming. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like Planes and Aviation?
