Yet, we won't give up," read an editorial in the very first issue of Alternative Press, in 1985. In the video, Alternative Press founders, editors, writers and designers share the story of how AP was founded, covering music on the fringes – punk, new wave, hardcore – before it was "alternative."

HISTORY LESSON - the History of Pop and Rock Music and Billboard Charts - Weekly Radio Show If you are a fan of music history or Billboard Charts and culture this show is a must ! Contact us to order for only $19.99 (shipping included) We have gone to the great task of converting the entire show to mp3 format so you will get all 80 hours worth of shows also as a bonus on DVD-R to play in your computer, ipod or mp3 player. This was a live broadcast weekly radio show in Canada that covered the history of Pop and Rock music from 1940 to 1988. In total there were 80 one hour long shows. You are getting all 80 hours worth of shows with tons of great music, billboard magazine chart info, music trivia, news and culture events and overall look back at each individual year of Pop music history over a 48 year period from 1940 to 1988. To confirm you are getting all 80 shows in mp3 format on dvd. Back in 1991-1993 Terry Hoknes hosted a weekly radio show which gave a complete overview of everything happening in society, entertainment and political news. The show helps you relive these great old days. Listen to all the current new music of that particular year, plus entertainment, sports and political news that was current at that point and then summarizing the year while looking back at some of the unique music on the radio each year. The goal here is to share some of these original radio shows which will entertain and educate. There is a full hour show for each individual year of the rock era from 1955-1988. Since most pre-1955 music is overlooked we wanted to give more attention to this pre-rock era music and we did numerous shows on each year. Some of the shows had up to 6 full hours of music and history. This show aired before computers or the internet came along so the show actually used original vinyl records, 45's and 78's. Chart information taken from Billboard Magazine chart books by Joel Whitburn and Fred Bronson and statistics and facts compiled by the DJ To discuss billboard charts online with other fans send an email to [email protected] If you would like to hear more samples of the shows we have the show streaming at this link: http://historylesson.multiply.com/ You will have to sign in as a new member for free to access the shows

Explore punk fashion around the world - from New York, California, London and Germany to Iran, Myanmar, Cuba, South Africa, Russia, and Japan. Punk fashion in the 70s pushed against cultural norms, embracing the androgyny of rockers like Patti Smith. Malcolm McLaren brought New York punk style back to London. Geometric shapes were incorporated into makeup for a striking look. When I, a shameless millennial, think of punk fashion, images of models and rock stars in the '80s and '90s immediately flood my mind. You know what I'm talking about: Courtney Love's signature smoky eyes, slip dresses and grungy outwear, Gwen Stefani's staple plaid pants and bandeau tops, the myriad of leather jackets, studded belts, and ubiquitous shades of black worn by all the rockers in that era. Sure, it's easy enough to conjure images of what punk fashion looked like during that time — partly because so many of the styles have made a comeback in recent years — though not everyone is as familiar with what inspired the timeless sartorial trend to begin with. For instance, did you know that in the '70s, punk fashion was first influenced by the androgynous styles of rockers like Patti Smith and Joan Jett? And was then brought to London, redefined in Germany, adapted in Iran, amplified in Japan, and so on. In Germany, punk evolved into German New Wave, with fluorescent hair color and dramatic makeup. Iranian punk took the classic London punk aesthetic and found ways to adapt it within their religion and culture, incorporating long sleeves and creatively integrating the hijab. A small community in Myanmar stayed underground during decades of military rule. The Cuban punks known as Los Frikis were outcasts, often homeless. Their rejection of society led to early incarnations of the crust punk aesthetic. South Africa's burgeoning punk scene was influenced by hardcore punk's pared down attitude. Pussy Riot brought protest punk to the forefront of Russia's music scene in the 2010s. Harajuku punk took on the London aesthetic and amplified the fashion. Is Rock & Roll over? Will it see a rebirth? What happened? What went wrong? Examining these questions and more in today's video! Get my shirt HERE: http://bit.ly/2z9sNrF Subscribe to the newsletter to get updates, extras and free stuff! http://bit.ly/2kPZc1e Before rock and roll, there was rhythm and blues. But we aren’t talking about that. Before Rhythm and Blues, there was Jazz. But we aren’t talking about that either. We’re going to be talking about Rock and Roll; its birth and more notably, its death. It was 1955 when Elvis redefined American culture and brought rock and roll into the mainstream. Part of this success came from his abundance of talent. But I’d be negligible if I didn’t mention Rock and Roll’s rise being amplified by America’s success post World War II AND the recent affordability of electronics entering the family living rooms in the form of television. As always the youth of the day ran with it first in effort to distinguish themselves from previous generations. The sexual overtones, while controversial at the time, were mild by today’s standards. Fast forward to the mid ’60s and Rock and Roll was pushing new boundaries by growing more inclusive with the embracing of The Beatles from across the pond and Jimmy Hendrix showing it was crossing color barriers at home. Watch the video to find out more! While it will never go away, rock and roll will never rise to a fraction of the dominance it once had. It went from being friendly in the ’50s, to idealistic in the ’60s, disillusioned by the ’70s, to frustrated and angry through the ’80s and ’90s… only to become soulless by 2000. Legendary Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd have traveled a road that's been anything but smooth. They've weathered more tragedy than many groups, and through it all, they've made some truly epic music. Their albums are classics of the genre, with songs like "Sweet Home Alabama", "Free Bird", and many more. Here's the tragic, real-life story of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd know that drummer Artimus Pyle survived the horrific plane crash that claimed the lives of other group members, but might not realize aviation was a passion he shared with his father, a retired Marine awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained while fighting in the South Pacific during World War II. Artimus Pyle followed in his father's footsteps. He enlisted in the Marines and hoped to pursue a career in civil aviation after the service. He even took flying lessons in the Marines, and his father, then a civilian, did as well. But tragedy followed, when Del Pyle was offed in a midair plane crash over Albuquerque in 1971. In an interview with radio personality Eddie Winters, Artimus recalled how his father had been hit from above and behind by a B-57 weather reconnaissance bomber. "Dad was in his Cessna 150 flying over some property that he was going to build houses on. He liked to do that; he liked to look at pieces of property from the air… He was offed instantly. That kept me from really losing my mind, because Dad never suffered. He was doing what he loved and then he was gone." A lengthy feature story in Spin magazine back in April 1999 detailed the tough road Lynyrd Skynyrd took to achieving their dreams as a band, as well as the rough ways bandmates treated one another all along the way, often resorting to violence to address their issues. The violent tendencies started before anyone knew who the band was, and it didn't stop when the fame came. There were stories of fighting in public and in private, of going on stage with bruises, bandages, and missing teeth. Introducing seemingly endless tours and a stable supply of drugs and alcohol into the proceedings didn't help. Take the story of a bar fight in Munich. It sprawled across the city and followed the band back to the hotel, where singer Ronnie Van Zant broke a bottle over the head of a Skynyrd roadie and used the shards to slice up guitarist Gary Rossington's hands. The show went on, though. Rossington played the next night with bandaged hands, as did Van Zant, who broke some bones punching someone, somewhere along the way. And that's just one incident in the history of the strange and volatile rock 'n' roll family. "Rock With You" was Michael Jackson's second short film, filmed in 1979 for the second No. 1 hit single from 'Off the Wall.' The Bruce Gowers-directed short film, featuring Michael dancing in a sequined jumpsuit and matching boots against a set of shimmering lasers, was ranked No. 6 on a list of Michael's 20 greatest videos by Rolling Stone. Michael's short film for "Rock With You" was the second of the three short films produced for recordings from that album. The single reached No. 1 in the United States in 1980, topping Billboard's Hot 100 and Hot R&B Singles charts and reaching No. 4 on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 chart that same year. "Rock With You" was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America on February 14, 1980, and Platinum of February 14, 1989. The song was ranked No. 82 on Rolling Stone and MTV's list of the 100 Greatest Pop Songs in 2000. In his 1988 memoir Moonwalk, Michael called "Rock With You," written by Rod Temperton, "the sort of thing I was aiming for" in creating an album to his vision. The short film featured Michael performing the song on a plain stage in a sequined jumpsuit and matching boots, a set of shimmering lasers illuminating his outfit from behind. Director Bruce Gowers praised Michael as "an absolute professional" in an interview with Rolling Stone. In 2014, the magazine would rank "Rock With You" No. 6 on a list of Michael Jackson's 20 Greatest Videos. Check out never before seen footage from the 1985 photo shoot of TWISTED SISTER'S "COME OUT AND PLAY" and the transport of this historic piece of HEAVY METAL history Photography and Art Direction by: Mark "WEISSGUY" Weiss You always remember your first! For Photographer Mark "WEISSGUY" Weiss, the first album cover he shot just happened to be TWISTED SISTER'S historic, multi-platinum "STAY HUNGRY." The 1984 album brought us the two rock anthems "We're Not Gonna Take it" and "I Wanna Rock," which will be performed by the Black Veil Brides at the Golden Gods Awards on April 11, 2012. How do you top the shockingly memorable image of Dee Snider, screaming and crouching with a rotting giant bone in his clutches? When Weiss was asked to create and photograph Twisted Sister's follow up album, "Come Out and Play," it was a no-holds-barred art director's dream. Weiss concocted a textured manhole cover design that opened to reveal a novel "pop up" mummy-wrapped Dee Snider resplendent with sharpened teeth, emerging from beneath the pavement. In September of 1985, a 1,000 pound manhole cover was custom-made with the Twisted Sister "TS" logo by Weiss' dad, who also supplied a fully constructed street in Weiss' NYC studio, for Dee to emerge from. After the shoot both items remained in his NJ garage for 27 years, until April 1, 2012, when the manhole cover was loaded onto an 18 wheeler for the cross-country trek to its ultimate destination of honor at the Golden Gods: History of Heavy Metal exhibit at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA beginning April 11, 2012. The truly heavy piece of metal history arrived last week to be displayed along with other heavy metal artifacts, including several of Weiss' iconic photographs from the era. These photographs are taken from Mark's Weiss' extensive collection of rock's most enduring images from the "Decade of Decadence." Mark Weiss' collaboration and history with the iconic rockers he worked with almost 3 decades ago comes full circle this year, with the recent completion of Dee's Snider's release, "Dee Does Broadway," as well as rocker Lita Ford's new cd, "Living Like a Runaway," both photographed and art directed by Weiss. Working with two of rock's legendary performers again, Weiss says, "I have always been there for the artists who were there for me when I began my career. We've all had and continue to have, peaks and valleys to overcome in our personal and professional lives. Without their loyalty and belief in my craft, I would have never been able to continue making my rock 'n roll dreams a reality." Mark will be at the opening of the Heavy Metal Grammy Museum to proudly share his piece of HEAVY METAL history.

http://www.rockikon.com ROCK iKON MAGAZINE (CLASSIC ROCK ╬ HEAVY METAL) Classic Rock [klas-ik rok] noun - definitive album oriented rock music of the first or highest quality, class, or rank, serving as an enduring standard, model or guide. Classic rock was originally conceived as a radio station programming formula which evolved into the album oriented rock (AOR) format of the early-1980s. In the United States, this rock music genre now features a large playlist of songs ranging from the early-1960s through to the early-1980s with more emphasis on the core albums, artists, and songs most often represented by the subset of recorded catalogue that was popular during the so-called original classic rock era (1964-1975) when rock and hard rock dominated the charts. British hard rock and progressive rock bands make up the central pillar of classic rock artists; significant among these are Led Zeppelin, ELP, The Who, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes and Queen. Concept albums indirectly led to the album-rock format and remain a major component of classic rock. American-bred 70s rock acts such as Aerosmith and REO Speedwagon, Toto, Heart, Rush, Boston and Journey often appear on classic rock radio stations. Also included is late 60s rock from artists like Santana, Free, Jimi Hendrix, Procol Harum, Jeff Beck and Cream. In many areas, Southern rock, notably that of Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top forms a significant subset of classic rock programming as well. Other classic rock playlists also include some of the hard-rock/heavy metal bands of the 1980s such as AC/DC, Guns N' Roses and Van Halen as classic rock. While new generations of fans are drawn to the most enduring classic rock songs and artists, similarly, more modern material by bands such as U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Soundgarden, Foo Fighters and The Red Hot Chili Peppers has proven to appeal to generations of older listeners. Heavy Metal [hev-ee met-l] noun - aggressive and heavily amplified rock music, commonly performed by groups that wear spectacular or bizarre costumes. Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion and fast guitar solos. Of all popular music forms, heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume, machismo, and theatricality. Heavy Metal has long had a worldwide following of fans known as "metalheads" or "headbangers". Although early heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, they were often critically reviled at the time, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid-1970s, UFO and Thin Lizzy reigned supreme while Kiss and Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal followed in a similar vein with Iron Maiden and Motorhead, introducing a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. In the mid-1980s, pop-infused glam metal became a major commercial force with groups like Motley Crue, Poison and Bon Jovi. Underground scenes produced an array of more extreme, aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth, while other styles like death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid-1990s, popular styles such as nu metal, which often incorporates elements of funk and hip hop; and metalcore, which blends extreme metal with hardcore punk, have further expanded the definition of the genre.
