Pete's Pet - A First Sight Words and Magic 'e' Story

04:40
I have written this story to help us learn about magic 'e'. Magic 'e' is often found at the end of a word and it can change a short vowel sound into a long vowel sound. Many of the words in this story become totally different words because of the magic 'e'. Some examples are 'hat + e = hate', pet + e = Pete, Tim + e = time, Rob + e = robe and tub + e = tube. There are many magic 'e' words in this story so look out for them as you read along. You will also find that I have included all of our First Sight Words which I have highlighted in their red or blue colour. I hope you enjoy this new adventure as you get to know Pete, Rob, Jan and Jane along the way.

English WHY - words with -e at the end

05:13
Learn about the letter 'e' at the end of english words and how it affects pronunciation. SCRIPT: Although words with an ‘e’ at the end are very common in english, the ‘e’ is hardly ever sounded. Here is a list of the most common word types that end with the silent letter ‘e’. But, you may ask, if it’s silent why do they have it? There are are a number of reasons: Firstly, to change how other vowels are pronounced in the same word. We pronounce english vowels Ay ee eye oh and you. But these words pronounce the vowels a i o and u: “tap can hat rip bit win not cod hop cut tub hug” The good news is that the vowel ‘e’ is not affected by this at all - so there are no words to learn! Adding the ‘e’ to the end of each word changes how it is pronounced. ‘Tap changes to tape, can to cane, hat to hate, rip to ripe, bit to bite, win to wine, not to note, cod to code, hop to hope, cut to cute, tub to tube, and hug to huge. All of the words now pronounce the first vowel as it is spoken - ay, eye, oh and you. There are a number of very common words that DO NOT change in this way. Listen to the pronunciation of these words and try to remember them: Have, there, where, come, one, none, give, gone, love, are, were, lose, move, service, practice and opposite You’ll notice more as you learn and you can see our video on phonemes to help you. The second way starts with this word - huge. If you remember how it sounded before the ‘e’ was added - as ‘hug’ - you will notice that the ‘g’ has softened from a hard ‘g’ sound, to give us the ‘dge’ sound - as with ‘age’, ‘large’, ‘cage’, ‘change’, ‘image’, and ‘manage’. Similarly, if an ‘e’ appears after the letter ‘c’, the pronunciation ‘c’ is softened, to become ‘advice’, ‘choice’, ‘piece’, ‘slice’, ‘since’ and ‘price’. The third reason is that ‘e’s are added to stop words ending in ‘v’ or ‘u’. ‘love olive give believe glove leave achieve live, avenue continue, clue blue glue argue value and true” all take the silent ‘e’ The fourth reason for the silent ‘e’ is a rule that states ‘all syllables must have a vowel’. Many of these syllables are pronounced as a ‘schwa’ which is the ‘uh’ sound that is not stressed in english words. Note the phoneme versions always show the schwa in between the letters at the end, even though the words are not spelt that way. You will also see that in these examples the ‘schwa’ has been reduced in size to show that it is almost not heard at all! Listen - bubble, cable, article, bicycle, handle, middle, single, ankle, apple, people, simple, bottle, little, puzzle. The silent e can also help you to see when ‘th’ is hardened to pronounce ‘th’. Listen to these examples: ‘breath’ ‘breathe.’ ‘bath’ ‘bathe’. ‘cloth’, ‘clothe’. Sunbathe, soothe, loathe seethe and teethe are other commonly used examples. The silent e is also added to prevent words that are singular - and end with the letter s - from looking like plurals - such as house, mouse, horse, promise, spouse and cause. By the way, there is a list of common words that always sound a single letter ‘e’ at the end - we, be, me, he, she, maybe. I hope you’ve found this useful. Watch the video again and try to understand all of the language used. I hope you’ll join us again. Bye!

A vowel is usually short when there is only one vowel in a word or syllable as in on, red and fantastic. A vowel is long when it says its own name. When a single vowel is at the end of a word or syllable, it usually makes the long vowel sound, as in go and paper. Vowels also have long sounds when they’re paired with a silent e or when they are vowel digraphs (two vowels paired together). Vowels in syllables Every syllable of every word must have at least one vowel. A vowel can stand alone in a syllable, as in unit and animal. It can also be surrounded by consonants, as in jet, shut and fantastic. Silent ‘e’ When e is the last letter in a word, and there’s only one other vowel in that word, the first vowel usually says its own name and the e is silent, as in cake. Consonant digraphs and blends In a consonant digraph, two consonants work together to form one sound that isn’t like either of the letters it’s made from. Examples include chap, ship, think and photo. Consonant blends are groups of two or three consonants whose individual sounds can be heard as they blend together. Examples of that are clam, scrub and grasp. Vowel digraphs and diphthongs In a vowel digraph, when two vowels are paired together, the first one is long and the other is silent, as in boat, paint and beach. In a diphthong, a new speech sound is formed when two vowels are paired together, as in cloud or boil. R-controlled vowels When a vowel is followed by an r in the same syllable, that vowel is “r-controlled” and is no longer short. Sometimes we refer to the r as “bossy r” because the r “bosses” the vowel to make a new sound, as in spark, cork, germ, birthday and burn. The ‘schwa’ sound Any vowel can make the schwa sound; it sounds like uh. Words like banana, vitamin, item, and another have the schwa sound. The schwa is only found in words with more than one syllable, but never in the “accented” syllable. The schwa is the most common sound in the English language! Soft ‘c’ and hard ‘c’ and soft ‘g’ and hard ‘g’ When the letter c is followed by the vowels e, i or y, it usually makes its soft sound. Examples of that are cent, circus and cytoplasm. The letter c also makes a hard sound, as in cat and cocoa. When the letter g is followed by the vowels e, i or y, it usually makes its soft sound. Examples of that are gel, giant and gym. The letter g also makes a hard sound, as in gas, gorilla and yogurt. The ‘fszl’ (fizzle) rule When f, s, z and l follow a vowel at the end of a one-syllable word, they’re usually doubled, as in stuff, grass, fuzz and shell. Using ‘k’ or ‘ck’ We use ck at the end of one-syllable word when it follows a short vowel, as in duck and trick. We use k when there’s another consonant immediately following the vowel, as in task and drink. The /j/ sound and the /ch/ sound When the /j/ sound follows a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it’s usually spelled dge as in badge, hedge, bridge, dodge and smudge. (The d protects the vowel from “magic e.”) When the /ch/ sound follows a short vowel in a one-syllable word, it’s usually spelled tch as in catch, fetch, stitch, blotch and clutch. Common exceptions are the words such, much, rich and which. Doubling When adding ed or ing to a word, we double the consonant if the vowel before that consonant is short. Examples of that are gripped and winning. We don’t double the consonant when the vowel is long. Plural nouns When a plural noun ends with s, ss, sh, ch, x or z, we add es to make it plural, as in classes, brushes and foxes. Otherwise, we just add s, as in cats. When a plural noun ends with y and it follows a consonant, as in pony, family and baby, we usually change the y to i before adding es to make it plural: ponies, families and babies. Broken rules In the English language, phonics rules are often broken. Your child will frequently come across exceptions to the rule. But your child’s teacher or reading specialist will teach those, too!
