TOP 10 Masterpiece of Victorian Architecture

13:23
The term Victorian architecture describes several - predominantly revival - architectural styles that were popular from the mid- to the end of the 19th century; this period largely corresponds to the so-called Victorian era or the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) after whom it was named. Though the leading Victorian architects were more or less guided by architectural styles of past periods, some of the world's most iconic buildings have been constructed during the Victorian era. Victorian Style Architecture Interior Design : Victorian Remodel in San Francisco

03:04
Victorian Style Architecture Interior Design : Victorian Remodel in San Francisco The Pierce Street project is a 1906 Victorian Pacific Heights remodel by San Francisco-based Feldman Architecture. The owners of this Victorian home wanted to maintain its traditional feel while injecting a modern feel and making it as eco-friendly as possible. The result is a beautiful space with open kitchen, roof top garden and plenty of natural light throughout. Pierce Street Renovation by Feldman Architecture: “The Pierce Street Renovation involved updating and reconfiguring a 1906 stucco-clad Victorian. The owners wanted to maintain the building’s traditional feel, but also to infuse some modern elements, so the house would be both more livable and reflective of their personalities. They also hoped for a light-filled house that would incorporate sustainable elements. Furthermore, the original house took up nearly the entire length of its lot and the clients wanted a garden that would be accessible from the main living spaces. To achieve these goals, Feldman Architecture placed the living areas on the top floor, where the light would be best and where, by removing a large portion of the rear space, a roof garden was created. Most of the walls were removed from this floor to create spaces that are visually connected but functionally separate. The building is set off the south property line, which allowed the addition of numerous large windows along the length of the house. New skylights on the north side flood the interior of the top floor and the long hallway on the second floor with natural light. Open-riser stairs, a light well, and interior windows also allow light to filter down to the second floor hall.” Photos by: Paul Dyer http://www.dyerphoto.com/ Subscribe to our channel : http://www.youtube.com/homeinteriorplus

People's Palaces - The Golden Age of Civic Architecture: Neo Classical [BBC, Full Documentary]

59:08
Architectural historian Dr Jonathan Foyle explores some of the best Georgian and Victorian neo-classical civic buildings in the north of England. He visits town halls, concert halls, libraries, schools and galleries in Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Manchester and Todmorden in an unlikely story of rivalry, ambition and power in the service of social responsibility. Neo-classicism harked back to Rome, democratic Athens and the Greek city-state. The regular proportion, geometry and symmetry of classical temple-style architecture suggested order in chaotically-expanding urban environments and served to associate towns regarded as squalid and unruly with the cultured ancient civilisations of antiquity. These were buildings constructed with the aim of elevating the towns in which they stood.

Victorian architecture

08:57
Victorian architecture is a series of architectural revival styles in the mid-to-late 19th century. Victorian refers to the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), called the Victorian era, during which period the styles known as Victorian were used in construction. However, many elements of what is typically termed "Victorian" architecture did not become popular until later in Victoria's reign. The styles often included interpretations and eclectic revivals of historic styles mixed with the introduction of middle east and Asian influences. The name represents the British and French custom of naming architectural styles for a reigning monarch. Within this naming and classification scheme, it follows Georgian architecture and later Regency architecture, and was succeeded by Edwardian architecture. This video is targeted to blind users. 29 Grand Victorian Houses and Architecture

01:01
Check out all 50 Victorian mansions at http://www.homestratosphere.com/victorian-mansions/. This video profiles 29 incredibly grand and ornate Victorian homes. Some are massive mansions while others are smaller, yet no less impressive in their design and attention to detail. Victorian houses were built all over the United States, yet there are some hotbeds of incredible Victorian mansions, especially in the California towns of Arcata and Eureka. That said, most cities and many towns have examples of impressive Victorian architecture. The Victorian style isn't for everyone; yet some people love it... love it so much they buy old, run-down Victorian houses and invest an incredible amount of time and money renovating them. San Francisco & Victorian Architecture Tour

03:26
About 48,000 houses in the Victorian and Edwardian styles were built in San Francisco between 1849 and 1915 (with the change from Victorian to Edwardian occurring on the death of Queen Victoria in 1901), and many were painted in bright colors. While many of the mansions of Nob Hill were destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, thousands of the mass-produced, more modest houses survived in the western and southern neighborhoods of the city. Painted Ladies in the Lower Haight, San Francisco, CaliforniaDuring World War I and World War II, many of these houses were battleship gray with war-surplus Navy paint. Another sixteen thousand were demolished, and many others had the Victorian decor stripped off or covered with tarpaper, brick, stucco, or aluminum siding. In 1963, San Francisco artist Butch Kardum began combining intense blues and greens on the exterior of his Italianate-style Victorian House. Kardum became a color designer, and he and other artists such as Tony Cataletich, Bob Buckter, and Jazon Wonders began to transform dozens of gray houses into Painted Ladies. By the 1970s, the colorist movement, as it was called, had changed entire streets and neighborhoods. This process continues to this day. One of the best-known groups of "Painted Ladies" is the row of Victorian houses at 710--720 Steiner Street, across from Alamo Square park, in San Francisco. The houses were built between 1892 and 1896 by developer Matthew Kavanaugh, who lived next door in the 1892 mansion at 722 Steiner Street.

The Dome of the Rock is a Muslim shrine located in the Old City of Jerusalem built toward the end of the 7th century. The building is one of the oldest examples of Islamic architecture. The dome was originally made of gold, now covered in gold leaf; Buildings are not forever. In 2008 the average lifespan of an office building was seventy-three years. Add five years to that and 78 years old was the average life span of a person living in the United States; Neuschwanstein Castle is located in Southwest Bavaria, Germany. The Romanesque Revival palace was built for a King Ludwig II during the late 19th century. It’s now visited by up to 6000 tourists a day; Windmills come in all shapes and sizes and their sails or blades have been driven by wind over the centuries to grind grains or pump water. Windmills or wind turbines today work essentially the same way but generate electricity instead; The Corinthian column is the namesake of the ancient Greek city of Corinth. The column was the last of the three classical orders to be developed and may have originally been inspired to appear like Acanthus leaves growing from a basket; Like the gargoyle doorknockers were originally meant as a kind of sculpture to ward off spirits. This door hardware became obsolete as a means to indicate ones arrival when the door bell was invented. That doesn’t mean however, they’ve gone away; The term Victorian architecture actually refers to a variety of styles that grew out of the period of Queen Victoria’s rein in Britain. The Architecture is eclectic but leans heavily on a Gothic sensibility—hence the prevalence of sharp vertical elements. This is a video series about facts in architecture. The 15 second videos featured in the series are created by Doug and posted every day on his Instagram account @dougpatt. http://www.howtoarchitect.com https://www.instagram.com/dougpatt/

Tyntesfield Victorian Gothic Revival House And Estate, North Somerset

06:49
Tyntesfield is a Victorian Gothic Revival house and estate near Wraxall, North Somerset, England. The house is a Grade I listed building named after the Tynte baronets, who had owned estates in the area since about 1500. The location was formerly that of a 16th-century hunting lodge, which was used as a farmhouse until the early 19th century. In the 1830s a Georgian mansion was built on the site, which was bought by English businessman William Gibbs, whose huge fortune came from guano used as fertilizer. In the 1860s Gibbs had the house significantly expanded and remodelled; a chapel was added in the 1870s. The Gibbs family owned the house until the death of Richard Gibbs in 2001. Tyntesfield was purchased by the National Trust in June 2002, after a fundraising campaign to prevent it being sold to private interests and ensure it would be open to the public. The house was opened to visitors for the first time just 10 weeks after the acquisition, and as more rooms are restored they are added to the tour. Tyntesfield House was recently used as a filming location for Sherlock The Abominable Bride.

http://weathertightroofinginc.com more of these Victorian houses can be seen on our Pinterest board → http://www.pinterest.com/weathertight/victorians/ What are Victorian houses? In the United Kingdom, former British colonies, and the United States a Victorian house generally means any house built during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837--1901). During the Industrial Revolution successive housing booms resulted in the building of many millions of Victorian houses which are now a defining feature of most British towns and cities. In the UK, Victorian houses follow a wide range of architectural styles. Starting from the early classicism inherited from Regency architecture, the Italianate style gained influence in the 1840s and 1850s, and the Gothic style became prevalent by the 1880s. Later in the Victorian era, the Queen Anne style and the Arts and Crafts movement increased in influence, resulting in the transition to styles typically seen in Edwardian houses. Victorian houses are also found in many former British colonies where the style might be adapted to local building materials or customs, for example in Sydney, Australia and Melaka, Malaysia. In the United States, Victorian house styles include Second Empire, Queen Anne, Stick (and Eastlake Stick), Shingle, Richardsonian Romanesque, and others. Fred Dibnahs Building Of Britain 2002 E4 Scottish Style

29:08
Fred Dibnah’s Building of Britain should be made required viewing for all students of history, archaeology, building conservation and architecture. Fred is able to make everything come to life. The late Fred Dibnah was a modern renaissance man. For not only did Fred say how something was built in times gone by, he would show the viewer, using exquisite drawings that he had executed himself, models or full-scale replicas, how the techniques had actually been employed by master craftsmen of times gone by. Episodes 1 and 2: The Art of Castle Building and Might Cathedrals. He explains how the castles were designed, how they were constructed, how they were managed and also, using a technique that Fred still used, how they could be taken during a siege. Fred’s description of how the cathedrals were made (complete with working scale models of Medieval construction techniques) is not only interesting but also somewhat moving, too. An interesting aside was that Fred was able to show carpenter’s marks on wood that were used to ensure that beams fitted into beams. A sobering thought that the master carpenter who made those marks has been dead for 1,000-odd years. Yet his work is still a testament to his skills, brought to life by Fred Dibnah. Episodes 3 and 4: The Age of the Carpenter and Scottish Style. The age of the carpenter describes how the skills of the carpenter really came into their own during the time of the Tudor great houses, when newly-wealthy merchants decided that they required a grand house for their family, suitable to their new status. Fred also pointed out some of the problems in these houses caused by faulty construction techniques. He also showed how these are being put right by using modern engineering solutions. Scottish Style covers what was basically the Adams style. Fred Dibnah examines examples of what became known as Scottish Baronial style. He takes the viewer round Glamis Castle, pointing out how a relatively straightforward stone structure was transformed into the wonderful structure that we see today, by using teams of master stonemasons. The plasterwork in the castle was executed by experts from Italy. Of particular note the violin, skilfully created out of a mould and plaster. As Fred discovered the tale that the plaster violin was a real violin, dipped in plaster was not right. The true story was much more interesting. And Fred has a reasonably successful go at plaster work himself. Episodes 5 and 6: Building the Canals and Victorian Splendour Here, of course, Fred Dibnah comes into his own. For this is Fred’s favourite era, I think. The Industrial Revolution and then into the times of Victorian Britain. He returns home to Bolton to look at what remains of the once-extensive canal system and to explain not only how they were constructed (complete with models, of course) but also why they were constructed. In Victorian Splendour Fred Dibnah takes a look at the fantastic work of Pugin when he was required to rebuild the Palace of Westminster in Medieval style, to match the remains of the palace. He shows how it was built, and how Big Ben’s clock tower was constructed and also reveals that Victorian pennies are still used to help regulate the running of the clock.
