Tomb Of 800,000 Year Old Queen Found In Egypt?

Support Us On Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MysteryHistory We Are Also On Steemit: https://steemit.com/@mysteryhistory On the 25th of January 2011, the streets of Cairo were being ravaged by a rioting population, demanding the end of President Hosni Mubarak’s 30 year regime. While the world was distracted by the dramatic scenes of chaos upon the streets above, deep within the ancient, dusty tunnels, a team of archaeologists led by Susanne Bickel of the University of Basel in Switzerland, was quietly making one of the most significant discoveries of the past century. They had initially found the top of large round stone at the eastern end of the valley of the kings. The archaeologists suspected that it was just the top of an abandoned shaft. But before they could investigate,, due to Egypt’s political process regarding finds within the valley, they had to cover the stone rim with their own locked iron door, inform the Egyptian authorities, and apply for an official permit to excavate. A year later, after gaining approval to excavate, Bickel returned with a team of two dozen people, including field director Elina Paulin-Grothe of the University of Basel, Egyptian inspector Ali Reda, and local workmen. each took turns lying on the ground, head pressed against the shaft wall, one arm through a small hole next to the cap stone snapping photographs. They left little doubt it was indeed am ancient tomb. On top of the debris rested a dusty black coffin carved from sycamore wood and decorated with large yellow hieroglyphs on its sides and top. Bickel has stated that she has never seen an Egyptian coffin in such a good condition before,” The dating of fragments of pottery made from Nile silt and pieces of plaster, commonly used to seal tomb entrances in ancient times, together with the age of other nearby sites, have indicated that the tomb could be more than 3 thousand years old. The hieroglyphs describe the tomb’s occupant as being named Nehemes-Bastet, Egyptologists currently believe she was a lady of the upper class and of Amun. People have been claiming there was nothing new left to find in the Valley of the Kings for almost as long as they have been digging there. The Venetian antiquarian Giovanni Belzoni believed he had emptied the last of the valley’s tombs during his 1817 expedition. While Theodore Davis, who excavated there a century later, came to a similar conclusion right before Tutankhamun’s burial chamber was found. Fortunately, there is a growing number of people who are beginning to suspect that there is a wealth of discoveries still left to be made in the valley of the kings, the Nile delta, and Egypt as a whole, and thanks to discoveries such as these, interest in these existing mysteries grows by the day. “It’s interesting to see that in this period, even a wealthy girl was buried with quite simple things,” Bickel says, comparing Nehemes-Bastet’s coffin and stele with the elaborate pottery, furniture, and food found in earlier tombs. “Her wooden coffin was certainly quite expensive,” she says, but nonetheless, it lacked the elaborate inner coffins found in similar burials. Is this the burial chamber of an extremely ancient queen? After reinforcing the coffin and securing the mummy, Bickel’s team have transported it across the Nile to Luxor, where a full investigation is currently being undertaken into the true identity of the mystery female. With substantial insight into the controversial finds within ancient Egypt, we personally suspect that often the tombs which appear the most crudely designed, containing wooden sarcophagus are generally found to be the most ancient, furthermore, their hieroglyphic writings were often far more exquisite in nature. Could this be the discovery of an original burial? And the crude hieroglyphic claim of the occupant’s identity a fake? Hiding the deltas true antiquity? A secret many fringe scientists have begun to believe is being protected by Egyptian antiquities. Many have come to suspect the Egyptians merely copied the original builders of the pyramids, after taking occupation of their structures many years later. Supportive evidence for these claims come in many forms: erosion upon the pyramids and especially the sphinx, including over 100 underground chambers, we are currently researching, discovered under giza In 1995, by a team led by Kent Weeks, which also show strong evidence of several flash flooding events involving sea water throughout their long existence. The lack of any written detail pertaining to the construction of either monument in any hieroglyphs found in ancient Egypt. And so on, We will continue to do research on Nehemes-Bastet, and will endeavour to keep you all informed regarding any notable findings. http://archive.archaeology.org/1207/features/valley_of_the_kings_egypt_chantress_coffin.html

Valley of the Kings

41:25
Just for a change from pyramids - 3d models of most of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings These models were made with SketchUp and Google Earth and the information mostly came from the Theban Mapping Project. These models are to give an idea of size, shape and location only. I have deliberately not attached pictures of wall decorations to keep the size of the file down. The numbering of the tombs was the invention of John Gardner Wilkinson who numbered the tombs in 1821. There were 21 tombs known at that time and Wilkinson entered the Valley and numbered the first open tomb 'KV1' (Kings Valley No.1), the second tomb was named 'KV2'' & etc. Tombs found after the initial 21 were given the next sequential number regardless of location. Some of the tombs were not included in this model since they were not much more than a hole in the ground there is no information available to give a clue as to who created it. The list ends with KV62, Tutankhamun. The selection of the Valley of the Kings as a cemetery may have been inspired by the natural rock formation in the shape of a pyramid overlooking the valley. The Ancient Egyptians believed this was the home of Meretseger, guardian of the valley who took the form of a giant snake. This is for educational uses only Music: http://www.purple-planet.com

Kent Weeks | Exploring the Valley of the Kings

32:44
Kent Weeks, (BA, '63, MA '65, UW Anthropology), remarks on his work exploring and preserving the Valley of the Kings. This talk took place at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle on November 29, 2012. In 1995, as part of a project to map and photograph every tomb in an area known as the Theban Necropolis, Weeks made a discovery that attracted worldwide attention. Excavating a tomb where he expected to find a handful of chambers, he discovered a labyrinth of hallways leading to more than 100 rooms. The tomb, known as KV5, is the burial place of the sons of Ramesses II, one of the greatest pharaohs, who ruled Egypt from 1279 BCE until his death 66 years later.

SOUNDBITE (English): Zahi Hawas, Head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities: "What was important about this coffin, why we came to open is because it's large, we could see some hieroglyphic inscription that we cannot identify because of the resin that is covering the lid of the coffin. When we opened that coffin we found inside embalming material but different from what has been found inside the coffin." 10. Various shots of archaeologists examining mummified remains 11. SOUNDBITE (English): Zahi Hawas, Head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities: The discovery proved, in my opinion, that this tomb was actually stolen at the beginning of dynasty 18 and after that used for embalming material. It was an embalming cachette because was found inside natural and linen and all this material." 12. Various shots of archaeologists examining mummified remains 13. Pan of mummified remains STORYLINE: Archaeologists unveiled on Wednesday the first tomb discovered in over 80 years in Egypt's Valley of the Kings burial site where dozens of pharaohs were laid to rest among their wives, children and courtesans. Dug some 10 metres (yards) deep into the rock, the tomb is known only by the acronym KV63 - the 63rd tomb found in the Valley in Luxor. The tomb, which is believed to be more than 3,000 years old, was discovered accidentally last year by US archaeologists working on the neighbouring tomb of Amenmeses, a late 19th Dynasty pharaoh. Scientists cut a hole in the tomb's door and got their first glimpse into the 2.5 metre by 4.5 metre (12-foot-by-15-foot) tomb in February. But Wednesday was the first time researchers and media were free to walk into the small square pit. Dozens of researchers and media excitedly crammed the single, small square pit of rock that makes KV63 as Schaden and Zahi Hawass, who heads the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, cracked open the last of seven sarcophagi found here. Instead of mummified remains, it revealed material used to embalm bodies, dozens of necklaces made from woven flowers and various other religious artifacts. Covered in resin cast to their owner's faces, all seven coffins were empty of bodies. Instead of mummified bodies, they were found to contain mostly pottery shards. One small sarcophagus, made for a baby, contained pillows that appeared to be stuffed with feathers. Archaeologists hope hieroglyphs will help scientists identify who the coffins were made for, and perhaps where the bodies were ultimately buried. Termites and possible ancient tomb robbers have damaged the sarcophagi so badly that it took months of labour for the team to excavate them, and 16 of the 28 funeral jars also found in the tomb remain to be opened. Archaeologists believe the tomb may have been used as a secret embalming chamber under later pharaohs before being forgotten for centuries. The tomb's discovery last year broke the long-held belief that nothing was left to dig up in the Valley of the Kings, the desert region near the southern city of Luxor used as a burial ground for pharaohs, queens and nobles in the 1500-1000 B.C. New Kingdom. The last tomb discovered there was the famed tomb of King Tutenkhamen, in 1922.
