Ships in storms can be so creepy to look at. Just look at those terrifying monster waves from those incredible videos. Those ships in rough seas sure look creepy. I wouldn't want to be in a ship in storm at sea.

This is "Sailing By" composed by Ronald Binge in 1963, and performed by the Alan Perry/William Gardner Orchestra, and is the version used by the BBC for its late night shipping forecast. Sailing By is played every night on BBC Radio 4 at around 00:45hrs before the late Shipping Forecast. Its tune is repetitive, assisting in its role of serving as a signal for sailors tuning in to be able to easily identify the radio station. It also functions as a buffer — depending on when the final programme before closedown finishes, Sailing By (or part of it) is played as a 'filler' as the shipping forecast starts at 00:48hrs precisely. The initial reason for its introduction was because of the indeterminate finish time for the preceding Midnight News, leading to filling music being played until the Shipping Forecast was due to start. Sailing By was added to allow for a clear break between the end of the music and the start of the forecast

In chapter 1 of the how to surf series, we learn how to read the waves and the 4 things to that determine the shape and power of the waves we surf. We learn about these important factors: - How wind affects the local texture of the water - How swell is created and what numbers we want to see in the surf forecast. - Why tides are important in shaping the waves. - The sea floor, known as bathymetry, and why it is perhaps the most influential. http://thesurfrat.com https://www.instagram.com/the.surf.rat/ https://www.facebook.com/the.surf.rat/ In the next video we'll get into the water and look at paddling, a vital technique that will get you catching more waves!

The Ocean is essential to life on Earth. Most of Earth's water is stored in the ocean. Although 40 percent of Earth's population lives within, or near coastal regions- the ocean impacts people everywhere. Without the ocean, our planet would be uninhabitable. This animation helps to convey the importance of Earth's oceanic processes as one component of Earth's interrelated systems. This animation uses Earth science data from a variety of sensors on NASA Earth observing satellites to measure physical oceanography parameters such as ocean currents, ocean winds, sea surface height and sea surface temperature. These measurements, in combination with atmospheric measurements such as surface air temperature, precipitation and clouds can help scientists understand the ocean's impact on weather and climate and what this means for life here on Earth. NASA satellites and their unique view from space are helping to unveil the vast... and largely unexplored.... OCEAN. NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information Systems (EOSDIS) EOSDIS is a distributed system of twelve data centers and science investigator processing systems. EOSDIS processes, archives, and distributes data from Earth observing satellites, field campaigns, airborne sensors, and related Earth science programs. These data enable the study of Earth from space to advance scientific understanding. ** GET THE GEAR ON AMAZON** https://www.amazon.com/shop/jimcyr We can download the weather forecast using the Iridium GO! and the Iridium Mail smartphone app by selecting your current location or nearest airport weather station. First we get our Iridium GO! outside and with a clear view of the sky. We can start an internet call by pressing on the device INTERNET | YES. Next we use our smartphone, here we are using an iPhone 5s which is in airport mode, and turn on wifi. We should be able to find the IRIDIUM hotpot name and connect to it. Now we'll open the Iridium Mail app and go to SETTINGS | WEATHER First thing is to go into LOCATIONS and here is where we can enable or disable our current location or add a nearby airport. Tap the + symbol to add a new location, here we can use a text filter to select a preloaded airport. Once done with the weather station location, you can go back and specify the weather units to your preference. Here we've kept the default settings and switched the temperature to Celsius. Now we are ready to download the weather forecast. We can confirm we still have an internet call active by tapping into CONNECTION and verifying this. Finally we can now go to WEATHER from the home page and tap CONNECT to start a call and download the weather forecast. - - - - - - - - - - - WEBSITE http://avoidingchores.com SUBSCRIBE!! A big coronal hole is rotating through the Earth-strike zone over the next few days, sending us some fast solar wind that could bring us more aurora. Along with that, the Sun launches a solar storm (a rarity during solar minimum) that could arrive around the same time as the fast solar wind. The bulk of the storm will likely miss Earth, but we could get some wake effects that could intensify the storming starting around the 28th, possibly bringing aurora down to mid-latitudes for a short while. Amateur radio propagation and GPS reception will be affected, especially on Earth's night side starting on the 27th and could last through the first few days in March. Learn the details of the coming solar storm, where and when to see aurora, and how else our Sun might affect you this week. Tropical Cyclone Oma is currently a Category 2 system, and is likely to approach the southeast Queensland coast late this week or over the weekend, with a coastal crossing possible. Video current at 12 pm AEST 20 Feb. 2019. Abnormally high tides, dangerous surf and strengthening winds are expected for coastal areas with heavy rainfall possible from Saturday. As conditions deteriorate with the approach of Cyclone Oma, significant coastal erosion and inundation of low-lying areas are serious risks. It has been five days since the accident, and the weather has finally decided to cooperate. For details, our Kim Bo-gyung joins us here in the studio. Bo-gyung, I understand that we are expecting some relief. That's right. The coming Tuesday through Saturday is neap tide, which is when the tidal currents are at their slowest, and sea levels are at their lowest. So rescue operations should be able to proceed with few interruptions from the weather.

The Shipping Forecast Will you show a sign; return and never leave? Fling me your lifeline; blow oxygen to breathe. Swans once, Time shocks me back here beneath the full moon’s glow; but now you’re not near and the rocks already know. Will you save my soul? Adrift now, sinking; naturally it’s me. The storm must take its toll on such ships that sail the sea. Different yachts for different spots, I’ve had my share of easy shots. Star by night and sail by day, sailing as the sails make way. Sailing closer to the wind, did the compass needle bend? I’ll track the fatal rocks today; beat the tide as the sails make way. Walrus says I can’t keep pace; will I sink without a trace? Swans so gone today; I’m lost alone as sails make way. Signets following mother’s feather downstream to open seas, more savage than they could dream; we do not appreciate each beautiful swan until it is gone … until … it is gone. Salvation my soul, complete the whole; be buoyant ; save this sinking me. The storm takes brutal toll on such ships that sail the sea. Castaway sad currents of the past; come back and stay forever. Shed sorrows that must not last; together we’ll master the worst weather. We are what we are yearning for- sails give way as feathers flower once more. So let us go, the rocks can stay- sails give way, sails give way- let’s swim as swans together; ships sailing on forever. David R Morgan April 2018

At the end of 2016, the state of Oregon had an installed wind generating power capacity of over 3 Gigawatts. Wind power, while clean and renewable, requires constant load balancing due to variable weather conditions. These conditions must be met with state of the art forecasting methods in order to maximize load balancing efficiency. New techniques in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) have been developed to better optimize load balancing. Visualizations of these new NWP simulations show how winds behave on the leeward side of Mt. Hood. These winds generate a wake that affects Oregon wind farms; causing swings in power that require dynamic load balancing. Credits: Scott Pearse (NCAR) Pedro Jimenez Munoz (NCAR) Branko Kosovic (NCAR)
