How to grow raft style bonsai; Grow more Bonsai Trees | raft and broom styles | mikbonsai Part 2

Grow more Bonsai trees | mikbonsai. Learn here how to make a raft style bonsai. This English Elm bonsai tree was air layered and the top part separated and is growing as broom style bonsai. The lower part was allowed to grow freely to be made into a raft style bonsai. This video shows weed removal from the pot containing the lower part now being grown as raft style, thinning of the new growth and selection of future trunks. The thinning of the new growth allows more light to get through and also for the energy of the tree to be directed into the remaining future trunks. More bonsai soil is added to the pot. The upper part is being grown as broom style and is shown in this video, but did not need any work done at this time. But the trunk is hollow on the air-layered part? To me a hollow trunk looks like the tree is not a very good shape (in nature it means that the tree was burned inside, or something happened to the wood inside the trunk)

This is one of my rescue trews, the owner was ill for many years and the wife badly neglected the trees and all the growth was on one side, very long branches and many other problems. I have been working on the tree for a number of years. The tree had a trunk chop by the previous owner and he had carved it, but it was ver basic, I have done some work on it to improve the carving, which is yet to be refined further. You are right, in nature the tree would have suffered some sort of a disaster in this case like a lightning strike or in a hurricane the trunk snaps and the trunk back buds. In all other respects the tree is healthy. Now you know what happened to this tree. Thanks for asking.

Thank you Bonsai J.

Thank you for your reply did you remove the bark all the way round.
mikbonsai (1 year ago)
When air layering, bark has to be removed and the area has to be scraped with a sharp knife to ensure noting goes up or down the tree. This is a prerequisite to making an air layer.
I will certainly going to try a raft style bonsai.very good.

Its not difficult, there are a number of methods to creating a raft style bonsai, this is one of them and the most effective.
