How can you tell what is live or dead wood? I'm just curious
Jim Doyel (1 year ago)
Matt - Even though you had an excellent piece of material to begin with, you did a great job of cleaning up the excess foliage, wiring and accentuating the dead wood, which in my opinion is the  most outstanding feature of this plant.  Great job.

Hallo ich beschäftige mich schon länger mit dem Thema Bonsai, jedoch würde ich mich sehr freuen, wenn jemand von ihnen mir erklären würde wie man einen outdoor Bonsai im Winter gießt. Danke

According to Japanese standards the main branch can be on the right side?

when you where exposing the deadwood 3:21 there was some red what does that mean?
flori114 (2 years ago)
The red colored wood is typical of juniperus sabina. It is totally natural due to the resins inside the wood.

I dont know if its background noise but I hope this demo wasnt wasted on ignorant people.
Kennet De Bondt (2 years ago)
Nice work. A sad thing about this demos (in general) is that it is never clear how such a tree will ever fit in a pot. The trunk and the foliage are great, but the rootspread...? Thanks for sharing. greets. Kennet

Kennet, you're absolutely making a point here. I think patience is the key when big containers are involved. :) As for styling, like with this juniper yamadori it is crucial to have material which doesn't only look good but which is healthy and well established - just like in this case. Otherwise the styling will be too much for the tree and it will suffer.
Bonsai Empire (2 years ago)
+Kennet De Bondt Hey Kennet! Well that usually takes several years, of gradually helping the tree adjust to smaller containers. A styling can be done in hours, the rest not so much :)
Thank you for sharing Bonsai Empire. Great work on this tree Matt Reel.

I like the promotion of using hand tools, peace and quiet with time to observe and think.

It's not a promotion, it's a personal preference and should remain so.
