In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve into Nocturnal.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

I hate both this Deadra and Karliah, Karliah needlessly condemnes the Dragonborn to sell his soul this she devil for some luck you never really truly relied on, and now instead of Sovernguarde your soul will be forever snared into the mist to forever serve this dark mistress.
One thought on the name of Ur Dra (that may not be how it's spelled). If the idea proposed is that she is the first of the Daedra could it be an allusion to her being the first to turn down Lorkan's proposal of creating Mundus? After all it is that refusal which separates the Daedra, and given her relative disinterest in the mortal plane in comparison to the other Daedric lords it would follow that she was least interested by the idea.
i love the concept of this series but the way you narrate your videos makes them real hard for me to follow; why do you end your sentences like that? The "narration technique" you are following makes listening to your videos a chore
Human brain: Nocturnal is the embodiment of the shadows, the patron of the thieve's guild, and can gift a person with immense luck and fortune, but just as well leave them with nothing should they cross her.
Lizard brain: hehe shadow lady hot
Strongest Daedric Artifact? HA, give me my Dwarven Ward Emitting satellite shield. And I'll sunder the world with my 1 second-paralysis enchanted Daedric dagger.
My enemies will either fall with a slit throat, or perish to a concussion after falling 7 times on their head when stiff...like a phallus in nocturnal presence Haha...ha!
Actually, I think it may go deeper than that. She *is* Lady Luck, and luck is fickle.
I'm thinking that her own powers may be as well, one moment she's all knowing and powerful, fed on the passive worship of all whom luck favours, and the next she gets her stuff stolen. =p
Vulari. The Governess of Despair. Her and Nocturnal share in the same values.
Of course, the main difference between the two is that Vulari is a governess of a mortal emotion/affliction, whereas Nocturnal is the DM of her own realm, and a symbol of virtue for a specific type of individual. Of course, Nocturnal bestows her good graces to all patrons of stealth, and Vulari, the same. It was Vulari who suggested to me that I try my hand at training in stealth, and of course, I excel, but my training in stealth is more assassin-leaning since I also train in the sword and in Parkour.
Honestly once I got the skelton key form Karliah I decided to keep it, become a vampire and join the dark brother hood. Like why would I give the key back? Isn't the real master act of theaving pulling one over on Nocturnal and the theive's guild themselves? I can't die and the Nightngales don't have the balls to take on the Brotherhood. If I die then Molag Bal will have to deal with an angry Noctural and he sure as hell won't concede my soul, the key or anything else so I can probably expect Noctural smuggling my ass out of cold harbour.
Side note: If you manage to complete all the deadric quests what do you suppose would happen to your soul? I belive Bohithia, Molag, Azura, Mehrunes, Noctural, Hircine all stake a claim on it.
Dan R. That, and when you get a reward from a daedra, that generally indicates that they have some level of respect for you/your abilities. And I would imagine that when that champion dies, and they see that the champion had managed to gain favor with all the Princes (and Sithis), that that would be incredibly impressive (there is a book that says the daedra do praise those who manage to outsmart them, and selling your soul to multiple daedra to make it hard for any one daedra to claim their soul would be one way out "outsmarting" a prince). So they might have enough respect for the mortal to let them pick where they want to go after they die. Though I seriously love what you said about only a madman seeing his soul that many times, and so they go to the Shivering Isles by default lol. That might just be my new head canon tbh.
But that would make the Deadra apear impotant. The Conciet is that they belive you are a worshiper/ servant rather than some extra dimensional gofer. Its your soul in exchange for one of thier artifacts.
Its probably reasonable to assume no one knows you have contracts with the other princes. They probably assume only a mad man would sell their soul 9 times over.
I assume fighting a war over a single mortal soul would be indignant.
Maybe if you do this you end up in the Shivering Ilses?
I think we would have the choice to go to what realm we choose, just not Souvengard. Me personally would go to Nocturnal's realm, hers sounds peaceful, no one to bother us as we slip in the Evergloom like a shadow
I have over 3000 hrs of play in this game You , ESO, EPIC NATE cover all the places and things to do and see, mods on the pc. side make this game the very best , other than Witcher 3 that,s my favorite, these two games are the best out there right now.
I feel that Namira is the embodiment of the dread of the Void, essentially a primal fear of darkness, whereas Nocturnal is darkness for its own sake. Namira requires others to fulfill her sphere, but Nocturnal is darkness that defies comprehension making her perfectly capable of being "fulfilled" before mortal, or even divine, existence
@Fudgemuppet: Great vid for one of my fave Princes but last point seems a bit biased.
The Void is The Void. It isn't just horrific or welcoming; it just is. & seeing nocturnal's darkness as simply an embracing benevolent thing kind of forgets the very quote you laid out from 'Purloined Shadows' about the Distraction getting swallowed by it.
The thought is that faithful followers inevitably end up as part of that darkness. Just because said followers see that as desirable doesn't mean you can't look objectively & realise that in the end you are just basically reformed as nothing but an extension of said darkness.
By my estimation that sounds like a pretty Sithis-y thing
Sorry for spoiling the mood, but amount of misconceptions you've made is almost offending. "Ur-Dra" doesn't mean "First Darkness" or "Original Daedra". It should be translated as "First/Supreme Ancestor".
Now quick lesson of Ayleidoon. Ur is morphene defining primacy. Adamantine Tower, first and most important Tower, was called Ur Tower. Voryn Dagoth, head of fallen House Dagoth, was better know as Dagoth Ur. And for Dra... as we know "Daedra" mean "Not Our Ancestors", while "Aedra" mean "Our Ancestors". So "D-" is equal to "non-". "Ae" is used in loretext with multiple meanings, but here it's "our". So for "Dra" only "Ancestor" left.
Now why is she called that way? Clearly it's not mortal misconception, therefore, some of well informed individuals caled her that way. It would be psijiic sage Lilatha and living god of knowledge Sotha Sil. Believe me, they know what they are saying. Oh, and Xan is stating that this title is accorded by nearly all of Oblivion Royalty. In fact, that title never was thrown by mortal. It was always connected to something bigger.
Also, first persona gave us possible explanation why "Ur-Dra": "The Night Mistress is Ur-dra - perhaps the eldest and most powerful of the Daedric Princes.", which clicks perfectly with Xan's "As the mother of night, she claims to be an aspect of the original Void itself, (...)". Maybe her domain isn't synonymous with Void itself, but it's derrived directly from it, what makes her one of eldest and most powerful et'Ada.
As for Namira, I believe you overinterpreted "sphere of ancient darkness", which was more symbolic than factual. I believe it was derrivered from Khajiit nickname of "Great Darkness", as they called her. And as for it, in context of Maw of Lorkhaj it was more about negative/evil influence than controlling night itself. In fact, none of her words or actions hinted us into thinking she have power over darkness. She's all about decay and that's ain't old domain. In fact it was formed only after Lorkhan's demise. So it makes her one of the youngest Princes. Also decay doesn't lead to nothingness. It's more of reusing physical elements in cycle of life and death.
As for worshipping Nocturnal, here you're also wrong. Xan mentioned prayers. In ESO Hagravens and Tundilwen were clearly her cultist. What's left? Skeleton Key? Opening metaphysical locks isn't unimaginable. In fact, we saw great example of that power. In CWC Nocturnal almost dettached Sotha Sil from his Realm with it.
This is all unnecessary speculation. I can tell you what Nocturnal is and invite you to play TESO Summerset. Nocturnal is evil, incredibly powerful and a great blinder. And yes, according to herself, she is the first Daedra and was there even before the lesser princes like Mephala came to be. You are right with your title, that she is misunderstood. That is because she is not that mortal cherishing patrion. She is a wicked and evil goddess and none should worship her. She is not what she seems.
Has full access to the place, nobody is there, plucking it from it's place and leaving... Not exactly exceptional thievery there. More garden variety casual theft anyone can do because it requires not the tiniest bit of skill. Have a key to your neighbors house while they are on vacation so you can put their mail inside and take care of the pets... and you can be as good a thief as Mercer Frey and just as scummy.
