How to Make a Raspberry Pi Smart Mirror

59513 ratings | 3527962 views
In this video, we give you some detailed instructions on how to make an easy raspberry pi powered home smart mirror. A smart mirror displays applications so that you can check the weather, local news, etc. while you are getting ready in the morning. It's also modular, so you can easy move it around or hang it on the wall if you like. We've created a basic application that you can run on the smart mirror, but it's totally customizable if you want to write some of your own code. We use a Raspberry Pi 3 in this video, but you can also use an A, B+ or any other Pi. *Note* we no longer sell these parts. In order to download the 3d printable files, visit our website: https://www.thehackershack.com/parts.html If you don't have a 3d printer, you should be able to print the parts on a local community printer or with an online service like Shapeways. Check our hackaday.io page for downloadable 3d files and a full parts list: https://hackaday.io/project/13466-raspberry-pi-smart-mirror LINKS: Github project: https://github.com/HackerShackOfficial/Smart-Mirror To Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEcNXmr7DYq1XxpWHSxaN0w?sub_confirmation=1 Get our 3D printer: http://robo3d.myshopify.com?rfsn=1004615.c5abe MATERIALS: 1 x Raspberry Pi 3 Amazon Affiliate Link - https://goo.gl/oVJcxK 1 x Low profile monitor (we used an old led display) Amazon Affiliate Link - https://goo.gl/a4HeP5 12 ft - 1x2 12 ft - 1x3 1 x Wood glue 1 x Low profile HDMI cable Amazon Affiliate Link - https://goo.gl/BzBTT8 1 x 18" - 24" Acrylic See-Through Mirror, 1mm Amazon Affiliate Link - https://goo.gl/mpvZWE You could also use a piece of one way film and a clear acrylic sheet Amazon Affiliate Link - https://goo.gl/pTgUQy *NOTE* - The above mirror might be too flexible and cause some distortion if it is not sandwiched properly. You could also use a thicker piece of clear acrylic and apply some one way mirror film: https://www.amazon.com/Mirror-Window-Film-Wide-Roll/dp/B004S7HPJ0/ref=pd_sim_201_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=PJC3NH7P1TA4X4Z9PRKT We did not experiment with this, so results may vary. Hello Hacker Shack, I am trying to download the repository from github but the permission gets declined, why is that
Annony Mouse (3 months ago)
Next time don't use scissors to cut that stuff, use a straight edge and run a razor along it to score it then just snap it off cleanly and you'll have a straight edge with no cracks, just like cutting thicker glass or plexi.

why people love to use lofi songs as their smart mirror tutorial bmg?
MrNikhilSmart (3 months ago)
I have made one, it is working awesome, I have some questions, because I am using raspberry pi for the screen behind the mirror to run the script, how to skip booting process at the beginning? run automatically the script and display date and time on mirror as soon as I power on just like we turn on lamp immediately after power on? in short how to use the smart mirror once setup and running well without needing to reconnect mouse and keyboard again just like a lamp or television set?

Awesome! Have you guys thought of a way to change the mirror contents or even create different profiles and be able to change it via your phone (it could access a local webpage hosted on the raspberry pi itself).

glue will not be strong enough of a bond over time. it is strong, but it is not a mechanical bind. As far as cutting the plexi-glass, you have to score it with an exacto knife or box cutter, and then snap it.

Very good and detailed explanation, awesome!!! I have never seen a hack saw used for wood cutting, also a framing square is handy when continuing your cutting mark down the side of the board.

MeshMN (8 months ago)
Very cool - but an extremely high learning curve here for people like myself who have no programming or PC experience. I suppose the Raspberry Pi tutorial, the Linux tutorial, and the Python tutorial - the audience is completely on their own to figure those out or they shouldn't be building this. Still a very cool idea and video..
Great Job guys! do i have to use monitor or tv ? whats that black case?

Hi Hacker House I would like to ask if it is possible to put a digital clock like in a transparent glass Thank you!
Hacker Shack (8 months ago)
We were looking into using transparent OLED displays for "smart glasses", but they aren't widespread/cheap enough yet. You could try to use a "pepper's ghost effect" to reflect the clock on the glass. Check out our holographic display video for more information about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrgGXQvAuR4
